Take a magical musical journey under the sea at Beef & Boards Dinner Theatre when the Pyramid Players proudly present The Little Mermaid this fall. Marc Robin and Curt Dale Clark's sweet stage adaptation of the classic Hans Christian Andersen tale is on stage select Fridays and Saturdays from Sept. 17 through Nov. 6.
An adventurous mermaid, Melody wants to emerge from the safety of the deep sea and explore what's beyond the ocean surface: the human world. But King Poseidon forbids his daughter from leaving her underwater home to be with dangerous humans. When Melody slips away from her own birthday party to see for herself, she winds up rescuing a drowning prince and falling in love with him. Desperate to become human, she bargains with Seaweed, the evil sea witch, to make her dream come true - at the cost of her beautiful voice.
The show's incredible music set the tone for Robin and Clark's adaptation of the original tale.
"Marc's music was written first - it's some of the best music he's ever written," Clark said. "The kids leave singing 'Birthday in the Sea' because it's Melody's birthday and the song is reprised at the end of the show. The kids leave singing it - very fun."
When it came time to write the script, "we went back to the original story and tried to stay more true to it," Clark said. "And we try to make (our shows) poignant for today's audiences."
Like their other children's shows, The Little Mermaid has a message.
"This message is 'acceptance of others'," Clark said. "Kids get the underlying morality of the show - even better than adults do."
The final production in the 2010 Live Theatre For Kids series, this exciting adventure is live on stage Sept. 17 through Nov. 6 at Beef & Boards Dinner Theatre. Children will have the opportunity to meet the cast of The Little Mermaid after each show for pictures and autographs.
