Madame Walker Theatre Presents Radio One's Amos Brown as Part of MLK Jr. Celebration, 1/16
The Madame Walker Theatre Center continues its annual tradition of a morning Freedom Walker down Indiana Avenue followed by a lively celebration in the historic theatre. This year’s program, much more concise than years past, will consist of a free light community breakfast at the Indianapolis Urban League. Bakery items and juice, sponsored by the NAACP, Starbucks, and the Minority Police Officers Association will be given away to the first 100 people in line.
The Indianapolis Alumni Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity will lead the mass of people from the Urban League down Indiana Avenue to the doors of the Walker symbolizing DR. Martin Luther King Jr.’s life and legacy. The 90 minute program themed “Living the Dream and Saving the Legacy” will open with remarks by local officials and will include dancing by Iibada Dance Company and a short speech by Amos Brown. In partnership with the Indianapolis Chapter of the Indiana Black Expo, Thomas Griffin (President of the Chapter) will host the event. Vicki Daniels will speak to the crowd as Madam C. J. Walker herself in full 1900’s regalia.
Amos Brown, Radio Personality for Radio One’s “AM 1310 The Light”, is an Indiana Hall of Fame award winning broadcaster and community servant. On his show, Brown discusses important issues allowing listeners access to local and national leaders in an environment of civility and respect. Amos helps listeners deal with bureaucratic red tape; resolve instances of racial insensitivity and advocates and challenges the community to be their best. Brown will encourage the audience to live the dream and preserve the legacy of DR. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Madam C. J. Walker.
Remarks will be given by local officials such as Congressman Carson, the Madame Walker Theatre Center Board Chair, Joni Collins and a special presentation from the Minority Police Officers Association. Hours later, the Walker will host the Indianapolis Symphonic Choir’s Annual Celebration Gospel Festival on the Main Stage at 7pm.
Order of day is as follows:
9am: Free community breakfast at the Indianapolis Urban League
9:45am: Freedom Walk from Urban League to Madame Walker Theatre Center
10am – 11:30am: DR. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration Program
7pm: Celebration of the Gospel Festival
