Da Camera presents Pianist Garrick Ohlsson, 3/2

Da Camera of Houston presents world-renowned pianist Garrick Ohlsson in a program focused on the superlative brilliance and beauty of Beethoven's sonatas on Friday, March 2, 2018, at 8 PM at Stude Concert Hall at Rice University. "Garrick Ohlsson Plays Beethoven" is presented as the second annual James K. Schooler Memorial Concert, recognizing the generous bequest made by a loyal Da Camera subscriber and donor.

Ohlsson is widely regarded as one of the great virtuosi, performing across the world's concert halls since he won the Chopin International Piano Competition in 1970. A student of the late Claudio Arrau, Ohlsson is known for his mastery of the works of Mozart, Beethoven and Schubert, though his performance repertoire ranges from Haydn and Mozart to works of the 21st century, many commissioned for him. The sonatas of Beethoven are Ohlsson's particular passion: His 10-disc set of the complete Beethoven sonatas for Bridge Records was released to great critical acclaim, earning him a Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Soloist Performance in 2008. The all-Beethoven program for Da Camera includes Sonata in C Minor, Op. 13 "Pathetique;" Sonata in F Minor, Op. 57 "Appassionata;" Sonata in C Major, Op. 53 "Waldstein;" and Sonata in C-sharp Minor, Op. 27, No. 2 "Moonlight."

Da Camera's chamber music series continues with "Cy Twombly and Music" on April 2 and 3, the Juilliard String Quartet on April 6 and "Wartime Stories: Reich and Messiaen" on April 21.

Tickets for "Garrick Ohlsson Plays Beethoven" start at $42.50 and are available by contacting Da Camera, 1402 Sul Ross, at 713-524-5050 or online at www.dacamera.com. Tickets for students and senior citizens are always half price. $5 student rush tickets are available 30 minutes before the concert begins.

Da Camera's concerts feature small ensembles performing chamber music, jazz, early music and contemporary music. A vital institution in the world of chamber music, Da Camera is a source of innovative programming, notably Artistic and General Director Sarah Rothenberg's programs connecting chamber music with literature and the visual arts. Da Camera is nationally acclaimed for thought-provoking chamber music programming, as well as a jazz series with a unique balance between renowned performers and emerging artists.
