December at Blue Note Hawaii, the state's premier venue for the world's most celebrated artists, promises to be one of the most musically-diverse months yet. The club kicks off with two nights of the island's hottest reggae acts with Revive the Live Waikiki Edition, followed by tributes to Billie Holiday and Duke Ellington, singer-songwriter Imua Garza and a nostalgic run with Henry Kapono as he presents the Songs of C&K. Acoustic rock and reggae artist Trevor Hall, the legendary Willie K and soulful guitarist Tavana take us into the middle of the month, leading up to GRAMMY(R) Award-winning trumpeter Herb Alpert.  The Hawai'i Symphony Orchestra will present a free concert at the Blaisdell Concert Hall on Wednesday, December 7 at 7:30 pm. This performance is not only intended to remember those who served and died in the attack, but to salute the remaining survivors and all who have served in the armed forces. Maestro Rob Fisher, Tony and Grammy-recognized for his work with the New York Philharmonic and the New York Shakespeare Festival will lead the HSO in a patriotic program that includes Copland's "Fanfare for the Common Man" and John Williams' "Hymn to the Fallen" from the film Saving Private Ryan.

Manoa Valley Theatre continues its 2016-17 season in a Hawaii premiere with the poignant drama The Elephant Man, by Bernard Pomerance, from the 1979, 2002, and 2015 Broadway seasons. Based on a true story, nineteenth century London's John Merrick, a horribly deformed young man, victim of rare skin and bone diseases, is befriended by a celebrated young physician, Frederick Treves. Rescued from a freak attraction in traveling side shows and introduced to London society, Merrick slowly evolves from an object of pity to an urbane and witty favorite of the aristocracy and literati only to be denied his ultimate dream: to become a man like any other. Awards include Tony Award, Best Play (1979), Drama Desk Award Outstanding New Play (1979), Drama Desk Award Outstanding Revival of a Play (2015).
Tony-Nominated Loretta Ables Sayre Set for Blue Note Hawaii Debut on 11/14

Tony-nominated Broadway actress Loretta Ables Sayre is scheduled to make her Blue Note debut in Waikiki on Nov. 14 with shows at 6:30 p.m. and 9 p.m. Ables Sayre's performances will feature jazz standard selections from the Great American Songbook. Joining Loretta will be Hawaii-based musicians Jim Howard on piano, Dean Taba on bass and Darryl Pellegrini on drums.

The HSO revives a long tradition of presenting concerts for children and families with this event. The "Ohana Concert" will be the first for the HSO which is celebrating its fifth season in 2016-17. The title piece, Prokofiev's "Peter and the Wolf" has long introduced young children to the orchestra and been a hallmark of youth concerts for decades.

Submission Window Now Open for The PlayFestival 2017

HI?PlayBuilders of Hawaii Theatre Company announces that The PlayFestival 2017 annual play submission window is now open.  PlayBuilders is calling for original, 10-Minute plays, one acts- (30 minutes or less), or portions of full length plays, no longer than 30 minutes, from adult playwrights and 15 minutes or less from youth (6th through 12th grades).

Monica and Squire Coldwell have been studying and performing improvisation for decades; they have studied with over two dozen visiting instructors and created improvisation long-forms (improvised shows generally more than 20 minutes long, as compared to short-form sketches of a few minutes). They have performed at improvisation festivals, both locally and nationally, as well as on the mainstage at the Chicago Improv Festival. They also founded Hawaii's first and only non-profit improvisation organization ImprovEd Hawaii. They have taught teachers, actors, students of all ages, and fellow improvisers skills including, building self-confidence, creating collaborations, curriculum, improvised plays and theatre skills.
