HTY Receives NEA Grant for WHERE THE MOUNTAIN MEETS THE MOON
The National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) has awarded Honolulu Theatre for Youth (HTY) a prestigious Art Works grant in the amount of $60,000 to support its upcoming original production, WHERE THE MOUNTAIN MEETS THE MOON. HTY is one of only seven Hawaii nonprofits to receive a 2015 Art Works grant; its grant was the largest of the seven.
Adapted from the Newbery Honored novel by Grace Lin, WHERE THE MOUNTAIN MEETS THE MOON is an original work created by the HTY company. It will be staged in its world premiere at Tenney Theatre, April 10 - May 9. The play incorporates Chinese legend, movement, puppetry and martial arts performance as it tells the story of Minli, a young girl who bravely sets off to change her family's fortune. Tickets are available at www.htyweb.org or (808) 839-9885.
Art Works grants support the creation of art that meets the highest standards of excellence: public engagement with diverse and excellent art, lifelong learning in the arts, and enhancing the livability of communities through the arts. A total of 1,118 organizations nationwide were awarded grants for a total of $29.13 million.
NEA Chairman Jane Chu said, "Since coming to the NEA, I have met with many NEA grantees and have seen first-hand the positive impact they have on their communities. These new projects will continue to demonstrate the power the arts have to deepen value, build connections, and foster an atmosphere of creativity and innovation both at the community level and with individuals throughout the nation."
