BREAKDOWN
All roles are available, except the two that are indicated as CAST.
[ALI] male, Iraqi immigrant, Late 40s - early 50s. Sam’s father. He speaks with a Middle-Eastern accent. Also plays [MAN]. He is a soft-spoken man, slightly haunted by his past in Iraq. He is head-over-heels in love with his wife, Sara, and wants his son to be in touch with his Iraqi heritage.
[YASMINA] female, Iraqi, 30s. She is an Iraqi refugee. She wears a headscarf and speaks with a Middle-Eastern accent. A complex, often secretive young woman, she has suffered some tragedies but pours that into her work as a painter and an advocate for refugees. She is alternatively dour and hysterically funny, warm and cool. She thinks of herself as weird and she sometimes is.
[MUSA] male, Iraqi, 50s. Yasmina’s father. He is an Iraqi refugee, new to Chicago. Speaks with a Middle-Eastern accent. In his 50s. He is absolutely devoted to Yasmina. A well-respected dentist in Iraq, he now has to drive a taxi in the U.S. Despite his frustrations about being a refugee, he is funny, warm, and an impeccable host.
[IMAM KAREEM] male, African-American, late 40s - early 50s. The religious leader of the mosque. Also plays [OFFICER]. A spiritual leader in the Muslim community in Chicago, he believes in making the community integrated. He has a warm, avuncular quality.
[AMIR] male, Iraqi, 30s. Iraqi man in his 30s. He speaks with a Middle-Eastern accent. A figure from Yasmina's past, he is trying to make the best out of a terrible situation.
These two roles are currently CAST:
[ABDUL “SAM” SAMEE] male, Early 30s, half Iraqi/half Puerto Rican Muslim. An ambitious young man who struggles with his cultural and religious identity. He is devoted to his overbearing parents but also trying to figure out who he is in the world. THIS ROLE IS CAST - we will see performers as potential emergency replacements only.
[SARA] female, Puerto Rican Muslim, Sam’s mother. She is in her late 40s. A sort of busybody but with a heart of gold. Funny and caustic and unafraid to say what she really thinks. THIS ROLE IS CAST - we will see performers as potential emergency replacements only.
