Jazz musical. Story of Rosa, a young black woman and Jack, a young white man. They fall in love despite the obstacles to an enduring interracial relationship in 1980.
Seeking (all roles are available (i.e. not yet offered and accepted); re-check audition notice for possible casting updates before attending EPA):
Note: All singers must be comfortable singing jazz and swing standards.
Jack Miller:
Caucasian man, 20s. Young charismatic systems analyst at Exxon. Smart, instantly likable, with a sense of humor. Baritenor to G.
Rosa Donovan:
African American woman, 20s. Young systems analyst at Exxon. Poised, intelligent; can hold her own in any situation. Alto to E, with strong belt.
Brad Donovan:
African American man, late 40s-60. Rosa’s father. Has become a CPA and controller of a corporation, after a career as a jazz trombonist. Proud and stubborn, but a good father. Baritone to E.
Ruby Donovan:
African American woman, late 40s-60. Rosa’s mother. High school principal. Warm, caring, but with some sass. Alto-soprano to G.
Ernie Harris:
African American man, late 20s-mid 30s. Charismatic former minister; now publisher of “Black Entrepreneur”, a successful magazine he founded. Bold personality who adopts different personas. Tenor to A.
Ben Miller:
Caucasian man, late 40s-60. Jack’s father. Plays clarinet in the city’s symphony, after a career as a jazz saxophonist. Generally has a great relationship with his son. Baritone to E.
Ruth Miller:
Caucasian woman, late 40s-60. Jack’s mother. Has been a homemaker since her marriage to Ben, and a devoted mom since Jack’s birth. Opinionated but caring. Soprano to A.
