WOMEN OF A CERTAIN AGE is one play that consists of three parts:"Did You Know My Husband?","Living For Design" and"Come On".

PART ONE "Did You Know My Husband?": Sylvia and Dottie are seated at a Thanksgiving dinner which takes place at the home of Sylvia's daughter, Julia. We only see Sylvia and Dottie. Sylvia asks Dottie if she knew her husband? Dottie seems startled by this question. The audience becomes aware that these two women have met and even wonders if Dottie had been involved with Sylvia's husband. As this first part unfolds, Sylvia tries to remember where she has met Dottie. The ending comes as a shock to Sylvia as well as to the audience, when it is revealed that Dottie is the sister-in-law of Sylvia, who is clearly suffering from dementia.

PART TWO--Five Months Earlier, July 4th."Living For Design": The same two women appear but it is five months earlier. They are once again in Julia's apartment. They are both designers. (See character descriptions). Dottie is planning a party for Sylvia, but has her own surprise which is that she has breast cancer. Both women have transformed reality through their designs. But now, with age, they are facing how difficult that has become.

PART THREE--Five months earlier--Valentine's Day."Come On": Julia, Sylvia's daughter, is a character in this third part and a narrator throughout the play. She tells the audience that she has learned from her mother that age has its problems, but it also has many wonderful things to offer, such as wisdom. She believes that she has a certain kind of wisdom that has allowed her to deal with men in a different way. As she explains this to the audience we hear the voice of a man, who soon appears on stage. He says only two words,"Come On," throughout the play. But these words have to reflect the thoughts that are going on in his mind. Julia and this man, Jim, have been lovers for years. He is a renowned violinist who travels around the world. She is a successful writer, who against her better judgment, follows him around the world. Until now. She has decided to break off their relationship. She is on her own turf--in her apartment. They have just made love. And she soon will discover that she doesn't have the wisdom or maturity that comes with age. Not yet!
