SYNOPSIS
There’s lightning in a bottle but a storm behind the scenes at the studio where Gene Kelly begins work on Singin’ in the Rain. He’s determined to keep both his longtime collaborator Stanley Donen and trusted assistant Jeanne Coyne on set… despite the fact that they’ve just divorced, and the torch Coyne carries for Kelly is the reason why. To top it off, their producer is wrestling with the studio for resources, and newly hired co-star Debbie Reynolds can’t even dance. One of the greatest movie musicals of all time is born in this intimate backstage play featuring the classic music, songs, and dance of golden-era MGM. This musical features real people and true events; we are seeking actors, ages 20s-50s, who can convincingly showcase iconic characters in this intimate snapshot of America’s Golden Age of film and musical theatre history.
SEEKING:
- Gene Kelly: (any ethnicity, male identifying, Tenor/Baritone, 40s) Our central character and a true triple threat; Gene is athletic, masculine, fiery, suave, and well versed in tap, ballet, partnering, and acro. Known for both his genius and madness, he guides us through the story with his determination, dynamic personality, and charm.
- Stanley Donen: (any ethnicity, male identifying, Baritone, 20s – 30s) Gene’s writing, choreography, and directing partner in “Singin’ in the Rain”. Another true triple threat, Stanley is quintessentially youthful, quick, and funny, yet very emotionally volatile when it comes to his relationship with Gene, and their shared relationship with Jeanne. Most proficiency is needed in tap, ballet/jazz and partnering experience are a plus.
- Jeanne Coyne: (any ethnicity, female identifying, Alto/Belter, 20s) A dancer first, Jeanne is another triple threat and a pivotal creative and life partner to Gene and Stanley. She is beautiful, complex, loyal, passionate, and captivating. Performs the iconic ‘Green Girl’ duet with Gene. Must be a strong singer.
- Arthur Freed: (any ethnicity, male identifying, Comedic Baritone, 50s) An American lyricist and award-winning Hollywood film producer who jump-started Gene’s film career and produced “Singin’ in the Rain”. He is bustling yet succinct, polished, and direct with a sense of humor. Must be a strong singer and mover.
- Debbie Reynolds: (any ethnicity, female identifying, Light Mezzo-Sop, 20s) A young, beautiful, earnest, naive, and charming golden age performer. While an actor/singer first, this role requires excellent tap dance abilities; other styles of dance proficiency are a plus.
