Allie Bateman's wedding is Sunday. When Dinah, her precocious younger sister, returns to their parents' home for the festivities, she brings a new boyfriend whose hidden history resurrects passions and painful memories for the whole family. Over one emotionally charged weekend, the Batemans must acknowledge and accept loss to gain hope for regeneration.

Seeking (all roles are available):

Dinah:

19. Very bright and attractive, but perhaps not conventionally so. Quite a bit younger than her twin sisters, she has struggled to find her place in the family. Craves their attention, affection and respect, and wants to be thought of as an adult at long last. Formerly anorexic. Funny, vulnerable and yearning for connection.

Althea:

Late 20s (character also appears at age 15). Kindergarten teacher. Getting married the weekend the play takes place. Very attractive, very compelling, but with an unsettled quality. Lacks the warmth you might expect from someone who teaches small children; sharp-tongued and very independent. No longer the wild child she was in her teens, she has made an uneasy truce with stability and adulthood. The death of her twin sister ten years before has permanently scarred her sense of self.

Maggie:

Mid 50s. Mother of Dinah and Althea, and very much the head of the household. Vivacious and energetic, with strong opinions and a strong personality. Educated and cultured; efficient. Her maternal instincts run toward problem-solving and remedy-prescribing, rather than toward coddling. Her constant activity masks a deep well of sadness that she barely keeps at bay.

Daniel:

30 (character also appears at age 16). Charming and sexy. Very smart, good manners, great sense of humor … but underneath the presentable exterior is a reckless streak. Cellist; teaches at Juilliard. Rides a motorcycle. A good guy, and an irresistible one. Genuinely loves this family, but he knows his presence at the wedding is likely to upset the applecart … and he shows up anyway.

Sandy:

Man, mid - late 30s. Althea’s fiancé. A painter. Very kind. At ease with himself and the world. Patient, non-aggressive, unflappable. Great at smoothing over tricky family dynamics. Very observant, he misses nothing, but will choose to take the high road, unless pushed.

Lawrence:

Mid 50s - early 60s. Dinah and Althea’s father. Intellectual, placid, kind. A man in a household of strong women; has learned to pick his battles. But his quiet strength is the center of gravity for the whole family. A great deal of forbearance; a great deal of sadness. The kind of man for whom the phrase “still waters run deep” was coined. When he speaks his mind, they all listen.

Young Dinah:

Dinah at age 5. Innocent, precocious, eager for attention.
