CYRUS: [30s - 40s, Black, Female-identifying. Powerful mezzo-soprano range, able to command attention and have fluid R&B melismas.] Cyrus is the charismatic, visionary leader of the Gramercy Riffs, the most influential gang in New York City. As the woman who has risen to the top of the city’s underworld, she exudes an effortless power that is built on skill, strategy, heart, and the conviction of her beliefs. She is inspiring and can move the crowd with her words, reaching the soul as well as the intellect. Through soaring song and speech, she convinces the assembled crews that in their hands, another world of unity and peace is possible.
LUTHER: [20s - 30s, White, Male-identifying. Strong tenor range, up to G/A, with a shrieking falsetto, able to sustainably use a wide variety of guttural and raspy sounds, including a heavy metal ‘death growl’.] Luther is a gleeful villain bent on inflicting violence and pain. He loves cruelty and destruction just for the sake of it. He is funny, terrifying, and excited by mayhem. A force of chaotic evil, Luther’s actions destabilize the whole city when he frames the Warriors to pay for his crime.
MASAI: [Late 30s - Late 40s, Black, Male-identifying. Strong rapper with a baritenor range, up to high F, with a range of expressive vocal techniques] Masai is Cyrus’ right hand, her lieutenant and enforcer, who stands behind her vision of creating peace among the gangs of the city. He is charming yet intimidating, with the authority to deliver justice as he sees fit. When Cyrus is murdered, Masai’s world is shattered, and he is forced to wrestle with his anger, his grief, and this new weight of responsibility.
FOX: [20s - 30s, Person of color, Female-identifying. Strong pop and legit singer who can rap, with a strong mix or belt to C/D.] Fox is the newest, least experienced member of the Warriors. She is shy, reserved, and quiet as a fox, still finding her footing in the hierarchy of the group. Her loyalty is easy to tap into, but she worries it may not run deep enough. The bravery she discovers allows her to protect the gang when they need it most. She may be the shyest, but turns out to be one of the strongest.
CLEON - CAST: [Person of color, Female-identifying. Seriously skilled MC plus strong rock / R&B abilities. High belt. 20s-40s] The founder of the Warriors, Cleon is a natural leader, both warm and fierce. When her crew is in danger, her instant reflex is to put them first. But she’s no sacrificial lamb. Her rhetorical skills prove strong enough to save herself and her beloved crew…
SWAN - CAST: [Person of color, Female-identifying. A full, jazzy alto with easy melisma and strident belt. 20s-40s] Second in command of the Warriors, Swan is powerful if taciturn. Catapulted into leadership after her mentor Cleon is taken by a rival gang, she isn’t comfortable with the new role but does what needs to be done to defend her crew on their perilous journey home. She stays focused on the end goal when others get distracted, never able to fully cut loose. She makes good decisions, is unafraid to fight, but underneath the cool surface is a terrified, hurt woman who has a hard time believing anyone might love her.
COCHISE - CAST: [Person of color, Female-identifying. Powerful soul singer. 20s-40s] The O.G. and vice prez of the group, Cochise has been bopping with different crews for a long time. She’s nurturing and warm, she has your back, but fighting is second nature to her. If necessary, she won’t hesitate to take an opponent out of commission. She’s ready to hang up her vest and ease out of the street life, but this fateful night with the Warriors is her last tango. She dreams of peace and hopes this night brings it into being.
AJAX - CAST: [Person of color, Female-identifying. A powerful rock mezzo with a punchy sound. 20s-40s] Ajax is always itching for a fight. She feels at home in conflict, and will start a brawl for no good reason. She’s the loosest cannon, the suicide bomber, but may actually need the group to prop up her identity more than anyone else in the crew. Feeling invincible after a victory, she can’t leave well enough alone, going on the offensive to attack anything that moves, no matter the risk. You want her on your team because she never runs out of live ammo, but you also know that she will get you in more trouble than you’d be in without her.
COWGIRL - CAST: [Person of color, Female-identifying. A sweet yet strong pop mezzo. 20s-40s] Cowgirl is a love bunny, a free spirit who smells of patchouli and doesn’t always clock danger coming her way. She’s wild and untethered, a pleasure seeker. She likes the boys, is ever ready for carnal discoveries, lets her body do the thinking. This means she is also ready to challenge any comer who gets in her way. She loves to laugh — and isn’t prepared for the grief exacted by the night as it takes its course…
REMBRANDT - CAST: [Person of color, Female-identifying. Light yet edgy pop soprano. 20s-40s] Street delicate, Rembrandt is the resident artist of the crew: a graf artist who has yet to flower fully into her talents. She’s just tagging, not yet piecing. But her eyes are open: the journey through the boroughs gives her a new sense of how mythic graffiti can be. Rembrandt’s nature is to witness and observe, as a creative and introverted thinker. She helps make the Warriors’ rep by painting their symbol everywhere they go. She’s ready to fight if need be, but is more interested in avoiding unnecessary conflict.
MERCY - CAST: [Person of color, Female-identifying. Major rock and pop lungs, strong throughout mix, able to sustain high and long tones with emotion. 20s-40s] A lady of the night ready to change up her lot in life, Mercy has a mouth on her, using her sharp words as both weapons and armor. Smarter than and undaunted by the losers around her, she instantly falls for the Warriors, a badass crew of women who are on the move. They’re her ticket off the block — and one of them may even spark something in her heart…
