VIOLET — Based on The Ugliest Pilgrim by Doris Betts, and Co-Produced with Phamaly Theatre Company.
Violet tells the story of a young, disfigured woman who embarks on a journey by bus from her farm in Spruce Pine, North Carolina, all the way to Tulsa, Oklahoma in order to be healed. The musical premiered Off-Broadway in 1997 and won the Drama Critics' Circle Award and Lucille Lortel Award as Best Musical.
VIOLET KARL — Femme, Late 20s, Mezzo-Soprano, white. Violet is a young woman with a facial scar who has grown up believing she is unlovable. Smart, sarcastic, guarded, and deeply vulnerable. She embarks on a bus journey hoping to have her scar “fixed,” by a televangelist, meeting Flick and Monty along the way.
MONTY — Masc, early 20s, Baritone, white. A confident and casually arrogant soldier. Monty is handsome, self-assured and charming in a hyper-masculine way but masks deep insecurity with bravado.
FLICK — Masc, late 20s, Baritone, Black. A gentle, thoughtful soldier who is emotionally intuitive and kind. Flick sees Violet for who she truly is and offers her real compassion. Struggles to balance racial tensions in the 70s with his duties as a soldier, but finds a kindred spirit in Violet.
YOUNG VIOLET — Femme, 12–15, Mezzo-Soprano, white. Violet as a child: open, hopeful, and eager to please before the world teaches her to hide. We see this character both before she gets her scar and after. Has a complicated relationship with her father.
FATHER — Masc, 30s–40s, Baritone, white. Violet’s father is loving but emotionally distant, struggling to connect after Violet’s accident which he blames himself for. A man weighed down by guilt and grief. Appears primarily in flashbacks.
BUS DRIVERS — Male, 20s–50s, Baritone/Tenor. A series of no-nonsense but humorous bus drivers who observe Violet’s journey from a practical, grounded perspective. Doubles as the Radio Soloist and the Waiter.
PREACHER — Male, 30s–60s, Baritone. A charismatic, commanding revival preacher who promises healing and transformation. He is theatrical, persuasive, and deeply confident in his own authority. Once believed deeply in his faith but has recently been having doubts. He is able to hold power over a crowd.
OLD LADY — Femme, 40s–60s, Alto. A fellow bus passenger during the first half of Violet’s trip. The Old Lady is blunt, observant, while unsuccessfully trying to be compassionate. A gnat on Violet’s journey. Doubles as the Hotel Hooker.
