Breakdown
VERY LIKE A WHALE
SYNOPSIS: An outcropping of rock overlooking the Great Salt Lake and the salt-beaten house beneath it. There is water, but it’s far-off, and to get there you need to pass through a zone of flies and decay.
The Great Salt Lake is disappearing—and so is this family’s sanity. When the eccentric Sharp family reunites to sell their late father’s lakeside home, chaos erupts as they’re forced to confront their legacy and the truth that lies beneath the salty water just outside their window. Salt Lake Acting Company (SLAC), in partnership with Flying Bobcat Theatrical Laboratory, will present the world premiere of VERY LIKE A WHALE, a new play by Troy Deutsch, as the opening production of SLAC’s 2026–2027 season.
VERY LIKE A WHALE is a farcical family comedy that grapples with climate change and the rapidly disappearing Great Salt Lake, blending sharp humor with urgent ecological stakes. The world premiere will be directed by Alexandra Harbold, Co-Artistic Director of Flying Bobcat Theatrical Laboratory. Robert Scott Smith, Co-Artistic Director of Flying Bobcat, will appear in the production. This marks Flying Bobcat’s second mainstage collaboration with SLAC; both projects are new works by New York City-based playwright Troy Deutsch.
