SEEKING:

ELINOR DASHWOOD: The eldest of the Dashwood sisters, and the rock of the family. She is intelligent, sensible, practical, kind, and, above all, reserved and self-contained. She guards herself from acting on her emotions, even when distraught and broken-hearted. Elinor takes care of the rest of the family. She always keeps her feelings to herself and makes sure that her mother and sisters are untroubled by her private heartbreak. She looks for the good in others, but also quite accurately assesses a lack of character in others, even if she does not voice her observations. Her head rules her heart, and she is the sense of the title.

MARIANNE DASHWOOD: The middle Dashwood sister. She is emotional, romantic, effusive and sensitive. Very intelligent, and attracted to all aspects of the arts, she reads the Romantic poets, loves Shakespeare, and plays the piano. She wears her emotions on her sleeve and is unwaveringly honest in her feelings. In fact, she is incapable of telling a lie and cannot flatter or behave in any way that is contrary to what she feels. She falls in love quickly and is incapable of hiding her sadness when love ends. Her emotions rule her entire being, and she is the sensibility of the title.

MARGARET DASHWOOD/LUCY STEELE: MARGARET DASHWOOD - The youngest Dashwood sister. She is affectionate, honest and fun loving. While too young to be much interested in romance, she is very much like Marianne in high emotions and youthful energy. An enthusiastic and very likable girl. LUCY STEELE - The younger of the two Steele sisters. She is willful and manipulative and can, beneath her overly polite manners, be quite cruel. She is fawning, calculating, and insincere, and she flatters to get what she wants. Marianne cannot abide her, though Elinor tolerates her.

FANNY DASHWOOD/MRS. JENNINGS: FANNY DASHWOOD - The wife of John Dashwood and sister of Edward and Robert Ferrars. She is a most unpleasant woman. Cold, selfish and inconsiderate, she represents the spoiled and selfish wealthy class of Austen's time. Money and status are her main concerns. The Dashwood women do not like her, and she does not like them. MRS. JENNINGS – Mother-in-law to Sir John. She is a robust, cheery, and boisterous busybody who is constantly occupied with the social obligations of her class. She is always busy doing something, though she always finds time to match-make and tease the Dashwood girls. She also acts as a surrogate mother for them, while they are in London, and there is a genuine affection for them beneath her playfulness and frivolity.

MRS. DASHWOOD/MRS. PALMER/MISS GREY: MRS. DASHWOOD - The widowed mother of the Dashwood sisters. She is a kind and loving woman who wants the best for her daughters. She hopes to see them lead happy, comfortable lives with good husbands, but is truly more interested in her daughters' happiness than in their financial fortunes. She is most like Marianne in temperament and can be impractical, emotional, and impulsive. MRS. PALMER - Mrs. Jenning's married daughter. She is a chatterbox, a busybody, and rather silly, but (like her mother) she is also good-natured and kind. MISS GREY - A haughty young woman in London society. An heiress with a dowry of 20,000 pounds. Willoughby marries her for her money.

EDWARD FERRARS/ROBERT FERRARS/MR. PALMER: EDWARD FERRARS - Fanny Dashwood's brother and John Dashwood's brother-in-law. He is a bachelor and a gentleman. Shy, bumbling, and honorable, he yearns for a private, quiet life of domesticity. He is not a smooth talker, nor is he terribly interested in art or literature. But he is honest and loyal and always does what he thinks is right. He is in love with Elinor, but his active conscience prevents him from breaking off his engagement to Lucy Steele. ROBERT FERRARS - Edward and Fanny's youngest brother. He is a silly, superficial, and entitled idiot. This is a small role, appearing in only one scene, but it has the potential of a show-stopping comic moment. MR. PALMER – Husband to Mrs. Jenning's daughter. He is always reserved and comes off as either bored or grumpy. He tolerates the effusiveness of his wife.

COLONEL BRANDON: A retired military officer and a friend of Sir John Middleton. He is quiet, dependable and caring. He falls in love with Marianne and also befriends her family, often helping them in moments of crisis. He always acts honorably and generously, even when Marianne ignores him.

JOHN WILLOUGHBY: An unusually handsome bachelor who is attractive, graceful, and cultured. He seems to be wooing Marianne but does not consider her reputation in light of his other relationships. He gives her large gifts and his actions towards her encourage gossip. Despite his charm and good humor, he ultimately favors money over love and treats those around him with indifference.

SIR JOHN/MR. JOHN DASHWOOD/THOMAS/MR. PERKS/DOCTOR: SIR JOHN - The owner of Barton Park. He is pleasant and friendly and does all he can to make the Dashwoods feel at home. He is outgoing and friendly and hunting is his primary amusement. He also enjoys getting dances and parties together so the young people can enjoy themselves. MR. JOHN DASHWOOD - The son of Mr. Henry Dashwood from his first marriage. He promised his father he would care for his stepmother and stepsisters, but is easily persuaded to give them nothing by his wife. He always sides with his wife, even when her actions hurt others. THOMAS – Faithful servant working for the Dashwood women. MR. PERKS - Servant at Mrs. Jenning's London house. DOCTOR - A country doctor who tends to Marianne when she becomes ill.

Chip Tolentino: An athletic, social, boy scout and champion of the Twenty-Fourth Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, he returns to defend his title, but he finds puberty hitting at an inopportune moment. C4 - B5

Logainne Schwartzandgrunenierre (Schwartzy): Logainne is the youngest and most politically aware speller, often making comments about current political figures. She is driven by internal and external pressure, but above all by a desire to win to make her two fathers proud. She is somewhat of a neat freak, speaks with a lisp, and will be back next year. A3 - F5

Leaf Coneybear: The second runner-up in his district, Leaf gets into the competition on a lark and finds everything about the bee incredibly amusing. He is home-schooled and comes from a large family of former hippies. He has severe Attention Deficit Disorder and spells words correctly while in a trance. A3 - A5. (Doubles as Carl Dad - Schwarzy's main trainer, the more intense and competitive of Schwarzy's fathers. G3 - D5)

William Barfee: A Putnam County Spelling Bee finalist last year, he was eliminated because of an allergic reaction to peanuts and is back for vindication. His famous Magic Foot method of spelling has boosted him to spelling glory, even though he only has one working nostril and a touchy, bullying personality. He develops a crush on Olive. E4 - B5

Marcy Park: A recent transfer from Virginia, Marcy placed ninth in last year's nationals. She speaks six languages, is a member of all-American hockey, a championship rugby player, plays Chopin and Mozart on multiple instruments, sleeps only three hours a night, hides in the bathroom cabinet, and is getting very tired of always winning. She is the poster child for the Over-Achieving Asian, and attends a Catholic school called Our Lady of Intermittent Sorrows. She is also not allowed to cry. C4 - E5

Olive Ostrovsky: A young newcomer to competitive spelling. Her mother is in an ashram in India, and her father is working late, as usual, but he is trying to come sometime during the bee. Having found comfort in its words and vastness, Olive made friends with her dictionary at a very young age, helping her to make it to the competition. She starts enormously shy and shyly blossoms. B3 - F5

Rona Lisa Peretti: The number-one realtor in Putnam County, a former Putnam County Spelling Bee Champion herself, and the returning moderator. She is a sweet woman who loves children, but she can be very stern when it comes to dealing with Vice Principal Panch and his feelings for her. Her interest in the competition is unflagging and drives it forward. B3 - F5 (Doubles as Olive's Mom - A fantasy version of Olive's mom at her Ashram in India. D4 - E5)

Douglas Panch: The Vice Principle. Frustrated with his life, he finds the drive of the young spellers alien to him. After five years' absence from the Bee, Panch returns as judge. There was an incident at the Twentieth Annual Bee, but he claims to be in a better place now, thanks to a high-fiber diet and Jungian analysis. He is infatuated with Rona Lisa Peretti, but she does not return his affections.

Mitch Mahoney: The Official Comfort Counselor. An ex-convict, Mitch is performing his community service with the Bee, and hands out juice boxes to losing students. He has no idea how to offer comfort but does find himself wishing he could find a way to make the kids feel better. E4 - A5 (Doubles as Dan Dad - the more laid back and ineffectual of Schwarzy's fathers G3 - D5 and Olive's Dad - A fantasy version of Olive's dad coming to the bee from work. E4 - B5)
