Seeking (all roles are available (i.e. not yet offered and accepted) unless otherwise specified):

Theatre’s casting note: “ALL ACTORS MUST HAVE STRONG COMMAND OF CLASSICAL TEXT.”

Alcibiades:

Man, late 30s–50s. Athenian general. Polished, with a strong sense of self. Powerful, single-minded and a tenacious warrior. Very comfortable in the world of power relations. Has a strong sense of right and wrong, and a vengeful anger that he is not afraid to unleash when he feels that he, or anyone else, has been treated unjustly.

Apemantus:

Man, late 30s–50s. Cynic. Extremely smart, with a biting sense of humor. Verbally acute, with a caustic wit. Intellectual who enjoys existing on the margins of society. In all outward appearances, he seems predisposed to a persuasive contempt for all things. However, upon further examination, it is clear that his bitterness is sourced from a deeper concern for society and mankind.

Flavius:

Man, late 30s–50s. Timon’s steward. Loyal, decent, open-hearted and grounded. Endowed with the rare trait of common sense. Simple, innocent and good man. True friend who cares enormously for Timon, and is willing to risk his own status and well-being to protect him.

Ensemble Men (Older Characters):

Characters are late 30s-50s and include

Lucius: Athenian lord. Vain, selfish. Happy to take advantage of Timon’s generosity, but

unwilling to help his friend when called upon for aid.

Lucullus: Another Athenian lord. Excited when Timon’s servants come to borrow money from him, because he thinks they come bearing gifts from Timon. Sempronius: Vain and pompous lord whose judgment and actions are clouded by his own ego and pride.

Ensemble Men (Younger Characters):

Characters are late 20s-30s. Seeking several versatile and transformative actors to portray various citizens of Athens including lords, creditors, senators, soldiers, servants, artists, merchants, etc. These appear throughout the play, and include

Lucilius and Servilius: Hard-working, honest and loyal servants to Timon.

Thieves: Rag-tag gang of villains and rogues who intend to steal Timon’s treasure, but end up reforming after hearing Timon’s bleak views on humanity.

Poet: Brimming with flowery language and a theatrical affect, he loves to talk, and finds poetry in everything. Cannot resist an opportunity to verbally embellish every object or situation that crosses his path.

Painter: World-weary and a bit severe. Has a very high opinion of himself, but nothing but contempt for his patrons.

Timon:

CAST. Auditioning performers will be considered as possible replacements, should any become necessary. Man, 40s–50s. Role for a leading actor with extraordinary range. In the beginning of the play, he must exude genuine good-heartedness and generosity of spirit which seems to know no boundaries. However, when his fortunes are reversed, and the world does not live up to his own example of selflessness and generosity, he swings violently to the other extreme, becoming the ultimate misanthrope.

Theatre’s statement: “We are committed to casting a diverse company. We are seeking actors of all cultures, ages, disabled and non-disabled.”
