Frank Thorney:
30. Charming. Handsome. Basically good guy who is forced into bad dealing by the corrupt nature of the world in which he lives. Requires a serious actor who must also be able to handle comedy. LEADING ROLE.
Old Thorney:
Man, 40s-50s. Nervous, heartfelt, stressed, feeling the financial pinch. SUPPORTING.
Susan Carter:
20s. Witty, sincere, sharp. Reminiscent of Beatrice in MUCH ADO or Kate in TAMING OF THE SHREW. Turns out to be incredibly sweet, almost to the point of saccharine. LEADING ROLE.
Katherine Carter:
20s. Strong, smart, open-hearted, wise beyond her years. Charming, very attractive. SUPPORTING.
Warbeck:
Man, 20s-early 30s. Tall. Drinks too much. Cocky, handsome, and short-tempered. Good-looking in a pugnacious kind of way. GOOD SUPPORTING ROLE.
Somerton:
Man, 20s-30s. Sincere. Romantic. Honest. Handsome. GOOD SUPPORTING ROLE.
Mother Elizabeth Sawyer:
Late 50s-early 70s. Poor woman. Tough as nails. Lives on the streets. Actress must be physically able to be “beaten” and fight back, move with facility. TITLE ROLE.
Old Banks:
Male, 50s-60s. Crotchety, irascible, irrational. Hard-scrabble, hard-working, embittered, starting to get down-on-his-luck farmer. SUPPORTING.
Justice:
Man, 40s-60s. Tall, imposing, big-voiced man of authority. SMALL ROLE (may start rehearsal 1 week later than the rest of the cast, on 1/4/11).
Old Ratcliffe:
Man, 50s-60s. Old farmer. Pitchfork-wielding fire & brimstone type. Real lynch-mob leader. SMALL ROLE (may start rehearsal 1 week later than the rest of the cast, on 1/4/11).
Anne Ratcliffe:
50s-60s. Bonkers. Funny. Heart-breaking. SMALL ROLE (may start rehearsal 1 week later than the rest of the cast, on 1/4/11).
The following five roles are cast. Auditioning performers will be considered as possible replacements, should any become necessary.
Dog:
CAST. Male, 30s-40s. The Devil. Totally seductive, often funny, and occasionally very terrifying. Actor must be physically very flexible and vocally adept. Must be willing to be in an intense costume/make-up situation. It probably won’t go as far as LION KING, but the actor must be willing to collaborate to make an amazing creature. LEADING ROLE.
Winifred:
CAST. 20s. Damsel in distress who learns to be strong. LEADING ROLE.
Sir Arthur Clarington:
CAST. 40s-50s. Malicious; the real Devil of the play. MAJOR SUPPORTING ROLE.
Old Carter:
CAST. Man, 50s-60s. Jolly, gregarious. Loves life, loves people. MAJOR SUPPORTING ROLE.
Young Cuddy Banks:
CAST. Man, 20s-30s. The Clown. Sweet-hearted, but completely inept. Totally innocent. Great comic timing; a young Art Carney. LEADING ROLE.
Statement of casting personnel: “ALL ROLES ARE AVAILABLE TO ACTORS OF ANY ETHNICITY. PEOPLE OF COLOR ARE HIGHLY ENCOURAGED TO AUDITION.”
