Prepare a brief contemporary monologue. Bring picture and resume, stapled together.
The play is set in April 1865 in Richmond, Virginia, just after the end of the American Civil War. Caleb DeLeon, a Jewish Confederate soldier, returns to find his family home abandoned by everyone except Simon and John — two former slaves, who were taught and practiced the Jewish faith the DeLeon home. As the three men reunite, they uncover a tangle of secrets… ties that bind them together and that, ultimately, might cost each man his freedom.
Seeking:
Simon:
50s-60s. African-American. A former slave. A devout practitioner of the Jewish faith. He has some education, but also a crude wisdom that is innate in him. Gravity, tenderness, and a strong moral compass. A patient and faithful man with a footprint on the earth.
John:
20s. African-American. Former slave. Smart, charming, garrulous…and calculating. His jovial disposition just barely masks a desperate and damaged character. Intoxicated by his new freedom, heedless of consequences. Dynamic and volatile.
Caleb:
20s. Jewish. A soldier who has just deserted from the Confederate Army. A young man of privilege whose world has been turned upside down by the South’s defeat. Seriously wounded, he is bewildered – and reliant on Simon, a man who now owes him nothing. Conflicted, depressed, and shaken to the core. His impulse for self-protection is at war with his desire to do the right thing.
