The Play:
In the aftermath of the Civil War, three men are at a crossroads. A bedraggled confederate soldier stumbles home looking for the life he left behind. Two of his former slaves receive him in the ruins of the once grand home during Passover. Through the evening Seder, loyalties are tested, a tangled web of lies is unraveled, and the meaning of Freedom is discovered.
SEEKING:
Simon :
(late 40s – late 50s) African American. A former slave of the DeLeon family. He is a passionate, caring man who loves his wife and daughter above all else. Strong, decisive, trustworthy, safe but has an edge of danger, competent, a believer. He is a devoted Jew who is very connected to the idea that faith requires submission. He is a fair-minded man who has managed to maintain his humanity despite atrocities committed against him. Now that he has gained his freedom from the Confederate surrender, he plans on building his own home and working for the DeLeon family for actual wages.
John:
(20s) Fair skinned African American. A former slave of the DeLeon family. Was taught to read by Mrs. DeLeon and is an avid reader. Intelligent, vulnerable, mischievous, and bitter. He has a misguided sense of entitlement. Very little of his innocence or humanity is visible at the surface; there is a naïveté and immaturity that comes from being sheltered. His anger rolls off of him in waves as he is unable to survive the injustices of his life unbroken.
Caleb:
(20s) Caucasian, Jewish. A wounded Confederate soldier. He is the son of the DeLeon family. Although raised Jewish, the war has made him question his faith in God and humanity. He is lost, scarred and haunted by war. He has seen too much. We should see the innocence tucked behind the cynicism. Like John, he has a sense of entitlement. He is broken, cracked on a spiritual fault line – he no longer believes in the intangible.
