Seeking:
John Cleary:
50s, Irish American, working/middle class Bronx coffee import merchant; charming and magnetic in impersonal situations, but not always able to be so in his personal home life. He has a sense of humor, is strong-willed, sometimes crude, often fierce (a hint of danger there), forever worried about finances, a staunch Catholic, and very fond of alcohol.
Nettie Cleary:
Late 40s-50s, Italian American, middle class Bronx housewife and mother, hardworking, conscientious, Catholic; the “nice girl” she shows the world hides a great yearning and a deep disappointment in the way her life has turned out.
Timmy Cleary:
21, the son of John and Nettie, just home from three years active service in WW II. Strong, attractive, witty, funny and charming on the one hand; guilty, angry and suffering the pains of re-entry into civilian life on the other. He is as fond of alcohol as his father is. Though sickly and awkward as a boy, he has returned from his time in the army very much a young man who is struggling to find his own footing and his own power. Resentful about being caught between his mother and father in a tug of war for his affection, and grappling with complicated feelings about his war experience, he is beginning to come to terms with the fact that he may not, after all, be able to go home again.
