Simon Gray’s final play about the Art historian and critic Bernard Berenson, who, living precariously in Italy on the brink of WWII, is offered lucrative remuneration for the attribution of a painting which may or may not be by Titian. The play deals with issues of art vs. commerce, and personal loyalty among friends.
Mary Berenson:
Caucasian woman, 60s, Bernard Berenson’s wife. American patrician. Rather frail.
Nicky:
Caucasian woman, late 30s to mid 40s. Bernard Berenson’s secretary. A specific but not easily identifiable European accent. With a certain carnality.
Edward Fowles:
Caucasian man, 50s, Joseph Duveen’s assistant. English. An intelligent parvenu.
