The true story of Helen Keller’s discovery of language. Helen, a young girl, is blind and deaf from infancy. The Kellers, a wealthy Southern family, desperately seek a cure for their daughter, reaching at their utmost desperation to a school in the North, where they find Annie Sullivan, a poor student, who travels to live with them to try to tame Helen’s wildness and educate her. The play centers around Annie’s determination to reach within Helen’s young mind by any means to unlock the key to language - and in reaching her, finds love in herself and touches our hearts. --- Seeking: Doctor/Anagnos: Male, 40-60. Mentor to Annie Sullivan. Wise and erudite. Kate: 30-40. Helen’s mother. Gentle, troubled. A true lady. Captain Keller: 40-50. Helen’s father. Strong-willed patriarch with a temper, but a soft heart. Helen: Seeking actress age 12-16; must be able to appear younger. Helen is bright and spirited. Blind and deaf from the age of two. This role demands physical agility, and an ability to portray Helen’s character without words. Martha: Girl, age 9-12. Plays with Helen. Percy: Boy, age 9-12. Plays with Helen. James: 15-19. Older brother to Helen. Sardonic, jaded and insightful. Has conflict with Helen’s father and his stepmother, Kate. Annie Sullivan: Helen’s teacher, a “Yankee” from the North. Determined, fiery and very intelligent. Raised in an orphanage. Journeys south to try to teach Helen language. Teaches her much more. Viney: Servant to the Kellers. A member of the family. Kind and diligent.
