COMPANY STATEMENT: Now in its 18th season, The Actors Company Theatre/TACT is an actor-driven, actor-run company of professional actors that presents neglected or rarely seen plays by acclaimed playwrights. The emphasis of our productions is on the text and the actor’s craft. Although TACT casts initially from its company, it does regularly engage guest actors for specific roles throughout its season and is particularly interested in meeting classically trained, versatile, and imaginative actors who are skilled in character work and transformation.

Seeking:

Men:

Josef Gross:

40 – 50s. The Managing Director of a large, amorphous organization. Slightly past his prime. He is a true humanist, but constantly stymied by his hesitant, doubtful and wavering disposition. He is a man of consistent vision, incapable of consistent execution. Once a path has been embarked on, he seems incapable of shifting course and always seems to be a few steps behind the chain of events. His demeanor does not inspire confidence, but, at best, sympathy.

Jan Ballas:

30-40s. Conniving and confident he always seems to have the trump card in his hand. Believes that he can attain power through controlling the means of communication. A manipulator of technicalities. A political villain with impossibly tight logic.

Otto Stroll:

30-40s. Primarily ruled by his appetites, his main goals seem to be doing as little work as possible and acquiring as much food and tobacco as available.

Alex Savant:

30-40s. A scholar of Ptydepe. Condescending in manners, lecherous in inclinations.

Mark Lear:

40s. The Ptydepe instructor. An expert with little patience for beginners. Professorial and strict.

Ferdinand Pillar:

30-40s. Mute. He seems to be everywhere and in on everything. His physical presence suggests an inside joke no one else is aware of. [Possible Double]

George:

30 -40s. The company “Watcher”: a hunched and bitter human surveillance machine. [Possible Double]

Peter Thumb:

30-40s. The teacher’s pet. The goody goody know-it-all with his hand perpetually raised with an answer. [Possible Double]

Mr. Column:

30 – 40s. Bears an uncanny resemblance to Pillar. [Possible Double]

Women:

Helena:

30- 50s. The sassy Commissioner of nothing. Over-familiar and unprofessional, calling everyone “sweetie” and making her secretary iron her slip.

Maria:

Mid 20s. Young, attractive and idealistic. She has an energy and ambition that the world of the play lacks.

Hana:

20-30s. Entirely self-absorbed. Impatient with any matter other than herself. Combs her hair relentlessly.
