SYNOPSIS:

Set in Alabama in 1900, the play tells the saga of the Hubbard family, who have lied, cheated, beaten, and killed their way to the top for generations. With the rise of industrialization, they want to keep it that way — they’ve drawn up plans for a new cotton mill. Regina Hubbard, married to the sickly Horace Giddens, wants her piece of the profits, but as a woman, she is left out — until she improvises her own stunningly manipulative plan — one that might cost her more than she could ever imagine.

SEEKING:

Ben Hubbard - THIS ROLE IS CAST. Male presenting, late 30s-early 50s, any race. A smooth talker. A shrewd businessman. Oldest son. Slippery. Has elegance that shields his ruthlessness. Looks good in an expensive suit. Nobody has any idea what he does in the bedroom.

Oscar Hubbard - Male presenting, mid 30s-early 50s, any race. Middle child. Never fit in, especially in society. Resents anyone popular. Feels himself the victim even as he keeps moving up in the world. A short fuse. Keeps waiting to be happy. Not as smart as the others, but not as dumb as he looks. Looks cheap in expensive suits.

Birdie Hubbard - THIS ROLE IS CAST. Femme presenting, mid 30s-early 50s, any race. A fading southern lady. An alcoholic. Had an artistic temperament but could never be an artist because she has never seen the world accurately. She retreats to girlishness to feel safe. Still has charm but is so rarely comfortable that it doesn’t come out often.

Alexandra Hubbard - Femme presenting, 18+ to play mid-late teens, any race. A girl who has been well trained. She has a soft heart and often a soft presence. It turns out there’s a strong will underneath it, but you wouldn’t guess it. Experience with piano playing a plus.

Leo Hubbard - Male presenting, 20s, any race. An entitled rich kid. He’s trying hard to be like his uncle Ben, but his natural inclination is so far from it. An unintentional clown. Exactly as dumb as he looks. A terrible lover, but he thinks he’s great at it. A terrible businessman, but he thinks he’s great at it.

Horace Giddens/Mr. Marshall

Male presenting, 40s-50s, any race.
Mr. Marshall: Would describe himself as “socially liberal but fiscally conservative.” Very wealthy. Very smart. Could be ruthless but doesn’t need to be. He’s achieved everything he ever set out to do and is extraordinarily lonely.
Horace Giddens: A “nice guy.” Sometimes a genuinely nice guy, and sometimes a self-assured accessory to the world’s crimes who sees himself as the hero. He wants to love Regina but never sees her clearly. He is dying and knows it but still can’t give away power. Has always wanted to put Regina in her place but doesn’t know it. Big plus if he’s a piano player.

Addie - Femme presenting, 40s-50s, Black or Indigenous. A maid/governess who has been with the family since at least Zan’s birth. She is devoted to Zan, but who knows how she feels about anybody else in the family. She knows her favor within the family depends on them believing she likes them. Sometimes genuine, often guarded.

Cal - Male presenting, 20-50s, Black or Indigenous. Cal is a middle-aged house servant who works for the Hubbard family. He's described as generally cheerful and obedient, even if he doesn't fully understand what he's doing. Cal is not a liar, but he will lie if pressured by the Hubbards.
