The Jazz Singer is the original play on which the Al Jolson (and later, Neil Diamond) films were based: the remarkably gifted son of a cantor pursues dreams of popular musical stardom, turning his back on the Lower East Side community and the faith his father holds above all other devotions. All comes to a head when the cantor takes ill just before the service Yom Kippur. (Note: Despite the original film's reputation, this is not a play about minstrelsy.)
