Breakdown
The Hills Are Alive! follows the story of a singing family who, trying to escape the Nazis, decide to cross the Alps into Switzerland. They encounter many obstacles along the way, including wild animals, strange mountain people, and sibling rivalry--all the while singing their way through any trouble. Will they survive? Set in the style of Broadway's Golden Age, this show playfully lampoons a timeless classic.
This show will be presented as part of the 2013 New York Musical Theatre Festival.

CAPTAIN VAN KLAPP/MOUNTAIN MAN/BEAR:
Male, mid-30s-mid-40s, Baritone. Father, a formal naval hero, stern but kind, knowledge of German a plus. Think an absurdist version of Christopher Plummer. Also plays a creepy yodeling Swiss mountain man and a bear.
The following roles are characters that are children but played by adults for comedic effect:
LUDWIGA:
Female, at least 5'3, 18+, character age is 13, blonde, Soprano with belt. Must be a strong dancer. Ludwiga is arrogant, happy to share her negative opinions with all, thinks being opportunistic and pragmatic, insecure on the inside.
BETTINA:
Female, 5'2-5'5, 18+, character age is 11, brunette (ethnically ambiguous or any ethnicity encouraged to apply), mezzo with belt. Must be a strong dancer. Bookish, quiet on the outside, know-it-all on the inside.
GERDY/MOUNTAIN MAN:
Female, 5'2 or shorter, or 5'7 or taller, 18+, character age is 5, mezzo with belt. Gerdy is hyper, odd, the type of kid who eats glue. Character voices encouraged. Also plays a creepy yodeling Swiss mountain man.
Performers of all ethnic and racial background are encouraged to attend.
