BREAKDOWN

[DELLA]
50’s, female, Caucasian. Born and bred in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Generous, kind, funny, steeped in Southern tradition but also has an adventurous and open spirit that has been tamped down for many years. All of that energy has been channeled into becoming a master baker. She is now being forced to question and confront long-held beliefs and prejudices.

[TIM]
50’s, early 60’s, male, Caucasian. Born and bred in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. A “good ol’ boy.” A plumber by trade. Has a big heart. Steeped in a conservative Southern and religious belief system. He’s sublimated a lot of joy and confidence in his own manhood because he and his wife were unable to have children.

[MACY]
Early 30’s, female, African-American. Grew up in New York City. Incredibly smart, perceptive, curious, political, impatient with any form of bigotry or injustice. A fish out of water here in her fiancee’s hometown in North Carolina, although she is somewhat fascinated by this alien culture. Bullying earlier in her life (she used to be obese) has produced a self- reliant, independent human being. Loves and is fiercely protective of her bride-to-be.

Story line: Della lives in Winston, North Carolina where her bakery is filled with delicious treats. When Jen returns to her hometown from New York and announces that she’s planning her wedding, Della can’t wait to make the cake. That is until she finds out that Jen is marrying another woman. Gay and straight, Brooklyn and the Bible Belt, sex and shame are just some of the ingredients vigorously stirred into this funny and incisive new play by Bekah Brunstetter, celebrated writer of TV’s “This is Us.”
