BREAKDOWN

THE BLUE VIOLINIST

SYNOPSIS: A Jewish family on the Upper West Side unites for a celebration that quickly unravels as buried resentments and politics erupt. A surreal blue violinist hovers, confronting the generations with the legacy they’ve inherited and modern truths they can no longer avoid.

SEEKING:

  • DINA: Female, (mid-late 60s) The emotional center of the play, the matriarch of the family. Very warm, wonderful, clever, vibrant & funny. A nurturer: deeply loving but very fearful of her family splintering. She feeds, jokes, and soothes. Takes pride in her appearance/is very active: probably does daily yoga. Dina is a Jewish immigrant from Israel and may have a slight accent.
  • ABE: Male, (late 60s-mid 70s) Dina’s husband. Intense, commanding, sharp and ideologically unwavering. Loves his wife and family deeply, but is shaped by moral conviction. The son of Holocaust survivors. Highly emotional, anxious and protective. Intellectual, fierce, short temper.
  • JAKE: Male, (20s) The “golden child.” A top student at Harvard; hard-working, likeable and successful in almost everything he pursues. Gentle, thoughtful, self-reflective, emotionally restrained. Ethically-motivated, humble, fair and generous. Avoids conflict. The youngest sibling. NOTE: Ability to play the violin, a plus.
  • JENNA: Female, (20s) Ben’s partner, also goes to Harvard. Intellectually intense, driven, attractive. Raised Jewish, and is a committed anti-Zionist. Diplomatic, well-informed, articulate, sincere and largely intractable, but also has charm. A destabilizing presence who upsets the family’s equilibrium.
  • RACHEL: Female, (late 20’s-30s) Jake’s, Joseph’s, and Yitzhak’s sister. A sharp attorney, discerning, confident and politically moderate. In the first trimester of her first pregnancy. Raises the stakes of every argument by considering the future: less ideological and more practical. Quiet authority and very happily married to Vinny. She’s the breadwinner of her family unit.
  • VINNY: Male, (30s) Rachel’s husband. An Italian-American police officer with swagger. A jokester who calls it like he sees it. Bravado mixed with affability. Genuine warmth and vulnerability peek through. Politically he leans right and though he isn’t Jewish, he is a staunch defender of Israel.
  • YITZHAK: Male, (30s-40s) American-born but made Aliyah and lives in Israel with his wife. Orthodox, is in the reserves of the IDF, intense. Disciplined, and has integrity. Physically imposing/in good shape, highly articulate. Confident in his opinions and doesn’t suffer fools. Oldest son.
  • JOSEPH: Male, (30s) Openly gay, but his father is still a bit awkward about it. Joseph is a buffer in the family. A truth-teller, self-aware, with a good sense of humor. Deep down, he is kind-hearted and provides humor and perspective. Balances charm and humor with gravity. An actor getting married to Alejandro.
  • SAMI: Male, (30s-40s) Engaged to Joseph. A therapist. Sami works with troubled teens, and is very good at what he does. Thoughtful, and a ‘rock’ for Joseph. Has a way of making everyone love him and puts people at ease. (He’s a hugger.) Does his best to mediate and tries to bring the intensity down in Joseph’s dysfunctional family.
