SYNOPSIS: Mike is having a very big day. He’s been holding onto a secret for a while, and today his secret is totally coming out. It’s also a big day for the country – huge decisions are being made all over, and at the center of it is one family teetering on the brink of… everything. Ten Brave Seconds is a bright and vital new musical, infused with infectious pop melodies and rooted in a big-hearted examination of one day in the life of a kid, a family, and a community stepping bravely from the dark unknown into the daylight together.
In reference to the character descriptions below – most characters we encounter currently are written with man/woman, he/him, or she/her pronouns and you will see that in the following descriptions. However, limiting the descriptions are, our casting seeks to be as inclusive as possible and we invite gender non-conforming, genderqueer, transgender and non-binary actors to submit for the roles they most identify with.
While the musical involves 16-year-olds, we are seeking skilled and nuanced actors over the age of 18 who can play/look 16 years of age.
MIKE: (Male identifying, 18+ to play 16) A bright kid who has always been good at not rocking the boat, or at least he was until his mother died unexpectedly. It’s been almost two years, and even though the surface waters seem calm, he’s about to come out and make a lot of waves.
CARL: (Male identifying, late 30s) Mike’s dad. He’s a good man doing his best, but before he could help his family adjust to the failure of his marriage, his soon-to-be-ex-wife died suddenly. Now all he feels is unresolved grief and a fairly sure sense that he is messing it all up.
BECKY: (Female identifying, 14) Mike’s sister. Against all the odds, she’s become the one thing in her family that is slightly stable. She has processed her grief remarkably, but it’s come at a cost: she is exhausted from being the most mature person in her family while still being 14.
GABBY: (Female identifying, 18+ to play 16) Mike’s best friend. A sometimes-social misfit who is also a smart young woman. She currently feels pretty not-so-smart because she’s all too aware that she has fallen in love with her best friend. And unbeknownst to her, the information she’s about to get today will kill that dream forever.
TIM: (Male identifying, 18+ to play 16) Mike’s new friend. The new kid in school, an easy-going guy who prefers to keep his life drama-free. But now he’s in Mike’s gravitational field, and drama is coming.
(Male identifying, 50s) Mike’s history teacher. The teacher you remember for the rest of your life. He’s kind but also tough and unsentimental. He knows something’s up with Mike, but he’s waiting for Mike to tell him.
A multitalented ensemble to portray Mike’s High School classmates but also function as psychological back-up for him when he sings.
