About the play:
Set in a South Bronx beauty salon, Standing At... is a glimpse into the lives of Chantrelle and Lanise, two friends struggling with their own definitions of love as one woman is surviving HIV and the other surviving her complex relationships. Infused with music and poetry, this fresh-voiced one-act play mixes the drama and comedy of love and life.
Seeking:
Chantrelle:
20s-30s, female of African descent; she is a hairdresser who is living with HIV. She is more soft-spoken than Lanise but strong. Struggles to accept the love that is freely given from her long-term boyfriend. Actor should be able to work with poetic language with ease/sing and move well.
Lanise:
20s-30s, female of African descent; she is both Chantrelle’s hair client and her friend. She is not afraid to take up space. Loud yet sincere. She struggles with breaking the pattern of giving her love to the wrong men. Actor should be able to rap, sing and move well.
