BREAKDOWN

SPREAD

SYNOPSIS: At a high school in Austin, Texas, four ninth-grade boys gather at lunchtime to make “spread,” or “Texas prison brick” from their snacks – dry ramen, hot chips, beef jerky, beans, hot water, all cooked in a bag.

Jeffrey, Andrew, Chris, and Jordan play fight, tease, talk shit, and try their absolute best to be friends to each other on the brink of adulthood. Spread offers a glimpse inside the fullness of all a ninth-grade lunchtime might contain: all the brutal, sweet ways we might try to be with one another.

NOTE: We’ve listed the ethnic and/or nationality background of the Latine characters as a reference, but the team welcomes Latine actors of all backgrounds to submit.

SEEKING:

ANDREW R.: (male-identifying, Black/Afro-Latine/multi-racial, 18+ to play younger) 9th grader, a boy; smart enough for 11th. Witty, cruel, sensitive, lonely. The smallest boy in the group, but brutal; big presence.

CHRIS V.: (male-identifying, Latine, 18+ to play younger) 9th grader, a boy; 9th grade, on top of it. Cool, romantic, caring, brutal. Big brother energy. Maybe the tallest boy in the group. Someone Andrew would be envious of. Chris is Mexican, Mexican-American, or multi-racial.

JEFFREY R.: (male-identifying, Afro-Latine/multi-racial, 18+ to play younger) 9th grader, a boy; old enough for 10th grade. Sweet, sad, big heart, athletic. Cares deeply about “being good.” The sweet-sad-boy energy and athleticism feel like the more essential vibes. Jeffrey is of Puerto Rican background.

JORDAN M.: (male-identifying, Latine, plus-sized, 18+ to play younger) 9th grader, a boy; did 4th grade twice cuz of a crush. Big, kind, sweet, tired lil bear. In many ways, the heart of the friend group. Loves school and learning, and is often too tired to do well, academically. Jordan is Mexican or Mexican-American.

MISTER R.: (male-presenting, any gender identity, Latine/Afro-Latine, mid 30s to late 40s) Public-school-teacher tired and broke, so energized and busy, but deeply in love with teaching, with students. Trying to figure it out, just the same as the students, with some years on them. May voice any other unseen adult, like the GUEST SPEAKER, THE ADMIN, THE OFFICE ANNOUNCEMENTS.
