2013-2014 Season Musicals with available roles:

THE COLOR PURPLE
Written by: Marsha Norman
Music & Lyrics by: Brenda Russell, Alee Willis and Stephen Bray
Director: Paul Daigneault
Dates: January 10 – February 8, 2014

CELIE (African-American, 20s-early 30s): Drives the story. Vulnerable, spirited, introverted, mischievous, seemingly passive but really not, has a deep, hard soul, believes that she is ugly, has a sense of humor which is sometimes wicked. She is an observer. Needs a great belt singing voice with lots of soul.

SHUG (African-American, 30s-40s): A popular singer, we meet her at death's door. Attractive, confident, dynamic, powerful, irresistible, but has a frailty, like a wounded animal. Her vulnerability is shocking later on. She is loved by both Celie and Mister. Needs a knockout, Bessie Smith-style, bluesy singing voice.

MISTER (African-American, 30s-40s. Also known as ALBERT): Like Celie, a deep well. Handsome, big, masculine, strong presence, dominating, capable of brutal behavior but also a victim in his own way. Gets his power for free. Married to Celie, he abuses her. He is in love with Shug. He transforms to a kind man by the end of the story. Needs a great singing voice.

SOFIA (African-American, 30s): Powerful warrior woman. Physically bigger but beautiful. Comfortable being large, great sense of humor, touching, vulnerable. Married to Harpo, she does not let anyone mistreat her. Needs comic chops. Needs a great belt singing voice.

HARPO (African-American, 20s): Mister's vulnerable, confused, good-hearted son. Represents the new generation. He marries the independent Sofia. He spends much time trying to get Sofia to obey him the way Celie obeys his father, but he is unsuccessful, as Sofia is considerably stronger than he is. Harpo eventually establishes a jukejoint in his first house and becomes Squeak's lover. Later, he and Sofia reconcile. Through his love of Sofia, he learns how to love a woman. Needs a great tenor singing voice.

NETTIE (African-American, 20s): Celie's younger sister. Attractive, adventuresome, feisty spirit, maternal, more educated and knowledgeable than Celie. She has a powerful bond with Celie. Forced by Mister to leave Celie, she starts a new life in Africa. Needs a great belt singing voice with African influence.

SQUEAK (African-American, 20s): Harpo's lover after Sofia leaves him. Although she is mistreated, she eventually undergoes a transformation, demanding to be called by her actual name, Mary Agnes, and starting a new life. She is of mixed ancestry. Attractive, sassy, fiery, strong-willed, unafraid to take anybody on, has a caring heart. Needs comic chops. Needs a great singing voice with belt and soprano capability.

THREE CHURCH LADIES (African-American, different ages): big, strong personalities and presences, character women who are the busybodies of the town, they see everything and comment on everything. Strong singers with comedic flair.

YOUNG NETTIE (African-American Female, 12)

YOUNG CELIE (African-American Female, 14)

OLIVIA (African-American Female, 9-12)

YOUNG HARPO & ADAM (African-American Male, 9-12)

GENERAL ENSEMBLE (African-American Males & Females, 20s-50s): Seven actors of all types and singing ranges, to play various roles in the ensemble. Need fantastic singing voices and dynamic personalities.

CARRIE THE MUSICAL
Music by: Michael Gore
Lyrics by: Dean Pitchford
Book by: Lawrence D. Cohen
Dates: May 9 – June 7, 2014

CARRIE WHITE (Female, 17): Carrie is a shy outcast who is often bullied by her classmates and constantly scolded by her mother, an abusive, mentally unstable religious fanatic. At the late age of 17, she has her first menstrual period in the showers at school, and is harassed by the other girls. Carrie triggers her telekinetic powers, and sets in motion the disaster that takes place at the high school prom.

MARGARET WHITE (Female, 40s-50s): Carrie's mother, Margaret is a religious zealot. Although she loves Carrie and wants to protect her from the world, her fanaticism often drives her to abuse her daughter. She thinks almost everything, especially things to do with the female body and sex, is sinful. This role has already been cast; actors may audition for possible replacement.

SUE SNELL (Female, 17): A popular teenage girl dating Tommy Ross. After tormenting Carrie White in the locker room, Sue begins to feel remorse for her actions. Conflicted between her desire to be popular and her need to ease her own conscience.

TOMMY ROSS (Male, 17): Sue’s boyfriend. A popular athlete (specifically, a baseball player), but is more than a mere jock. He is a gifted student who has had his poetry published in literary journals. Feels guilty about the other students’ treatment of Carrie, but is reluctant to help change it.

CHRIS HARGENSEN (Female, 17): The leader of a band of popular girls who continually tease, harass and bully Carrie. The Queen Bee; dangerous and sure of herself.

BILLY NOLAN (Male, 17): Chris’ boyfriend and the leader of a dangerous gang in Chamberlain, Maine. He does not seem to really care anything about Chris, and acts more as though she is his enemy rather than his girlfriend.

MISS GARDNER (Female, 30's-40's): Gym teacher. She is sympathetic towards Carrie and counsels her, looking to improve her situation any way she can.

MR. STEPHENS (Male): English teacher and school guidance counselor.

REVEREND BLISS (Male): The host of a local religious radio program. Can be played by the same actor as Mr. Stephens.
