SYNOPSIS: Somewhere Over the Border: Inspired by the real-life journey of the author Brian Quijada's mother (Reina Quijada) from El Salvador to the United States, and by L. Frank Baum’s The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, Somewhere Over the Border blends the factual and fantastical in its portrayal of one young girl's pursuit of the American Dream. As Reina travels north to the Mexican border, she gathers friends, faces danger, and clings to the memory of the little boy she left behind. Set in the 1970s and propelled by Cumbia, Mexican Mariachi Boleros, American Rock, and Hip Hop, this new musical is both a fable and a family history — a testament to the determination born of love.
REINA – (18 to mid-20s, VOCAL RANGE: Soprano)
A determined, enterprising, and risk-taking young mother who is trying to provide the best future for her infant son. From El Salvador.
NARRATOR – (mid-20s to 40s, VOCAL RANGE: Bari-Tenor)
Charming, funny, and quick on his feet, the Narrator serves as the audience’s guide through direct address and song, while also playing multiple characters with a quick change of a hat. Note: Must have a facility with hip hop and/or rhythmic song styles. Guitar playing is a plus.
JULIA – (40s, VOCAL RANGE: Mezzo)
Faithful, loving, religious, hardworking, and quick to feel hurt. Julia is Reina’s mother and is from El Salvador.
ADAN / CRUZ – (20s, VOCAL RANGE: Tenor)
ADAN: Playful, supportive, and impulsive. Reina’s brother, from El Salvador.
CRUZ: A well-read, brainy farmer from Guatemala who dreams of studying at the university. He often shares more knowledge than necessary. Note: Must have the ability to handle both comedy and drama.
DON NAPOLEON / SILVANO – (50s, VOCAL RANGE: Bass/Bari)
DON NAPOLEON: Always has a side hustle or knows who to contact. Reina’s employer and friend, invested in her future.
SILVANO: A sad, drunk innkeeper, heartbroken because his family left him for the U.S. A very over-the-top character.
ANTONIA / LEONA – (50s, VOCAL RANGE: Alto)
ANTONIA: Lively, outspoken, adventurous, loves to be the center of attention, but always there when you need her.
LEONA: A Catholic nun from Guadalajara who dreams of being a rock star but is too afraid to show her talents.
FERNANDO: approximately 10 years old, able to sing proficiently.
