BREAKDOWN
Storyline: A powerful, dance-infused piece about whether to hold on to dreams or face reality in an ever-evolving, ruthless world. It's 1959 and the new musical West Side Story is a smash hit on Broadway. In their tiny family apartment in the San Juan Hill neighborhood of Manhattan, the young Candelaria siblings dream of glamorous careers in show business. When the opportunity arises to audition for roles in the film version of West Side Story itself, all their dreams seem poised to come true – until a neighborhood-wide eviction abruptly threatens everything they have worked for.
NOTE: Actors with strong dance training, specifically in ballet & Jerome Robbins style choreography strongly encouraged to submit.
[INEZ CANDELARIA] – 50s, she/her, Latine. A magnetic, spirited, fiercely determined Puerto Rican mother who believes anything is possible if you work hard and never give up on your dreams. Among her several jobs, she's a theatre usher and lifelong Broadway devotee. She pours everything she has into her children's show-business dreams—even prioritizing dance, music, and acting lessons over food and rent. Married to a song-and-dance man who is rarely home, Inez believes she is the glue holding her family together. NOTE: This role will require some dance ability.
[ALEJANDRO CANDELARIA] – Early-mid 20s, he/him, Latine. Inez's eldest son. He's a gifted dancer and former Broadway child chorus actor whose dreams have been put on hold to keep the family afloat. Dependable, pragmatic, and deeply loyal, he works whatever job necessary to make sure his siblings can follow their dreams, there's food on the table and the rent is paid during his father's prolonged absence. Compassionate but increasingly resentful, Alejandro is the one left to absorb the fallout when the family's dreams collide with reality. NOTE: This role requires a very strong dancer.
[FRANCISCO CANDELARIA] – 18+ to play late teens, he/him, Latine. Inez's younger son. The actor of the family. He is quick witted, impulsive, a bit rebellious, and approaches life with optimism. He seems to find trouble or trouble finds him. He chases girls, vices, and his dreams with fierce determination while constantly trying to avoid being pulled down by his circumstances. He's desperately trying to find his way out without losing himself. NOTE: This role will require some dance ability.
[REBECCA CANDELARIA] – 18+ to play mid-teens, she/her, Latine. Inez's only daughter. A bit of a reflection of her mother. She is bright, hopeful, has genuine talent, but tends to dream harder than she wants to work. Aspires to be a Broadway performer and has all the raw ability to make it happen. Over the course of the play, we see her grow up and find a deeper sense of herself and her abilities. NOTE: This role also requires some singing.
[JAMIE] – Mid 20s, he/him, White. Not Inez's child, but was practically raised by her. Charismatic, driven, hard worker. Jamie has broken into Broadway's inner circle as Jerome Robbins' assistant. He is the family's living proof that talent, determination, and knowing how to navigate the right doors can lead to success. His quick ascension to success has led to some distance between him and his adopted family, particularly causing some tension with Alejandro. NOTE: This role requires a very strong dancer.
