Seeking (all roles are available unless otherwise specified):
Casting note: Play is set in northeastern England, and all characters except Mary speak with a Geordie dialect. A dialect coach will be employed for the production, but actors should be prepared to “take their best shot” at the audition.
Janet:
36. Rutherford’s daughter. Seems beaten down by life, tired and expressionless. Yet beneath is a desperate longing for love and a white-hot anger at her imprisonment.
John:
Late 20s. Rutherford’s son. “Delicate-looking and boyish in manner – attractive, in spite of the fact that he is the type that has been made a gentleman of and stopped half-way in the process.” Still a child fighting to become a man.
Mary:
26. John’s wife. “A gentle delicate-looking woman” who turns out to be the most forward-thinking person in the play, with the most positive value system, and the most strength. From London.
Ann:
60s. Rutherford’s sister. “A faded, querulous woman” who thinks the world of her brother and is his staunch defender.
Richard:
“Is younger than his brother John, though he appears older, exhausted as he is by his work.” Rutherford’s son, a curate who disappointed his father by choosing not to go into the family business – and his father has never let him forget it.
The following roles are cast. Auditioning performers will be considered as possible (emergency) replacements, should any become necessary.
Rutherford:
CAST. “A heavily built man of 60, with a heavy lined face and tremendous shoulders-a typical northcountryman.” An athlete when young (champion runner), he can discipline with his fists, but keeps his family in line with the force of his will. An intimidating presence.
Martin:
CAST. Early 40s. Rutherford’s foreman. Pure working class. Rutherford’s devoted right arm and surrogate son. In love with Janet.
Mrs. Henderson:
CAST. 40s. Powerful heavy drinker. Mother of a boy who has been fired by Rutherford.
