Breakdown
SEEKING ALL ETHNICITIES:
NURSE: [60 years old or less] The woman who cared for Juliet her entire life. Vulgar, long-winded, and sentimental. Juliet’s faithful confidante and loyal intermediary in Juliet’s affair with Romeo.
LADY CAPULET: [40s] Juliet’s mother, Capulet’s wife. A woman who herself married young, she is eager to see her daughter marry Paris. She is an ineffectual mother, relying on the Nurse for moral and pragmatic support.
CAPULET: [50s] The patriarch of the Capulet family, father of Juliet, husband of Lady Capulet, and enemy of Montague. He truly loves his daughter, and thinks that what is best for her is a “good” match with Paris. Often prudent, he commands respect and propriety.
LADY MONTAGUE / AS CAST: [50s] Romeo’s mother, Montague’s wife. She dies of grief after Romeo is exiled from Verona.
MONTAGUE / AS CAST: [50s – 60s] Romeo’s father, the patriarch of the Montague clan and bitter enemy of Capulet.
BENVOLIO / AS CAST: [late 20s] A Montague. Romeo’s cousin and thoughtful friend, he makes a genuine effort to defuse violent scenes in public places.
SAMPSON / AS CAST: [late 20s] Sampson is a servant of the house of Capulet, who, like their master, hate the Montagues. At the outset of the play, he successfully provokes some Montague men into a fight.
PARIS / AS CAST: [late 20s – 30s] Paris is a kinsman of the Prince, and the suitor of Juliet. Very presumptuous and entitled.
TYBALT / AS CAST : [early 30s] Tybalt is Juliet’s cousin. Vain, fashionable, aggressive, violent, and quick to draw his sword. Once drawn, his sword is something to be feared. He loathes Montagues.
BALTHAZAR / AS CAST: [early 30s] Servant of the house of Montague.
__________________________________________________________
CURRENTLY CAST:
ROMEO [CAST]: (late 20s) Handsome, intelligent, and sensitive. Though impulsive and immature, his idealism and passion make him an extremely likable character.
JULIET [CAST]: (late teens – early 20s) A beautiful aristocratic girl who begins the play as a naïve child and grows up quickly upon falling in love with Romeo.
MERCUTIO / AS CAST [CAST]: [30s] Romeo’s close friend. Imaginative, witty with a biting satire. At times brooding and can be quite the hotheaded.
FRIAR LAWRENCE [CAST]: [50s] A Franciscan friar, friend to both Romeo and Juliet. Kind, civic-minded and always ready with a plan. He secretly marries the impassioned lovers in hopes that the union might eventually bring peace to Verona.
