CASTING DIRECTOR'S NOTE: Diversity is essential; Estelle is likely African American, but there isn’t necessarily a set ethnicity for each role as long as the overall casting is diverse.

ALSO NOTE: All five characters are security guards. Each lacks self-awareness (especially emotionally). It’s a play of people who tend to talk at one another as opposed to with one another.

DONALD (Male mid 20s) Open-hearted genuinely nice guy who just wants people to get along. Compassionate and optimistic. Bit naïve, bit simple, bit of a dude, terrible taste in music. Sometimes his desire to fix things makes him overly controlling. By the end of the play, he’s embittered, closed off, and losing hope.

ESTELLE (Female mid 30s to mid 40s) Droll, dry. Terribly unobservant. Lonely, but barely notices it (if at all). A bit complacent. Not hot blooded. Likes to knit. Uninspired. A bit of a blunt object. Has never had a pet.

ANGELA Update, posted 5/30/12: Role previously listed as available has now been cast. Auditioning performers will be considered as possible (emergency) replacements, should any become necessary. (Female early 30s) Serial monogamist, and the one who gets out. Little patience for humoring people. Not always the most tolerant. Direct, but not a bitch. Sexy, but not in an overly feminine way. At top, head over heels about Don, horny, feisty and dirty. Eventually discovers she’s grown stuck in her patterns. Knows how to self-protect when push comes to shove.

PAUL Update, posted 5/30/12: Role previously listed as available has now been cast. Auditioning performers will be considered as possible (emergency) replacements, should any become necessary. (Male 40s) Toxic. Suffocating. Manipulative. Often an asshole. Takes up space. Atypical alpha male who loves to play the martyr. Indulges in his rage, pain and despair to operatic proportions. Capable of great love and compassion, though it’s deeply buried. Great at effortlessly cutting down those around him / getting a rise out of people. Patronizing. Surprisingly sophisticated tastes.

RANDY Update, posted 5/30/12: Role previously listed as available has now been cast. Auditioning performers will be considered as possible (emergency) replacements, should any become necessary. (Male late 40s) The most myopic of the group. A man of routines, stuck in his ways. Strong ideas of right and wrong, even if they’re only his. Thinks quite highly of himself, a confirmed bachelor saving himself for the perfect woman. Prickly, a bit overly sensitive at times. Marches to the beat of a drummer no one else can or ever will hear.
