Elizabeth Sawyer F 40s/50s/60s. An outcast. A self-sufficient, self-possessed, and whip-smart misanthrope with minimal patience for most people.
Scratch M 20s/early 30s. The devil. Clever, charismatic, comfortable, manipulative, observant, a smooth operator… you know, devil stuff. But also thoughtful, considerate, capable of honesty, sincere connection, and vulnerability.
Sir Arthur Banks M 50s/60s. A wealthy and powerful man in the last chapter of his life and thinking about his legacy here on earth. A bit out-of-touch, susceptible to flattery, but capable of genuine deep emotion.
Cuddy Banks M 20s/early 30s. Sir Arthur’s son, painfully shy, a morris-dancer. He is secretly in love with Frank (and also in hate). Gentle, sensitive, occasionally bordering on desperation, and often overcompensating. He longs for his father’s approval and will go to great lengths to achieve it.
Frank Thorney M 20s/early 30s. Born into poverty, he’s used his charms and good looks to win the favor of Sir Arthur. Can be ruthless in getting what he wants. His ambition knows no bounds.
Winnifred F 20s/early 30s. Sir Arthur’s servant, resigned and pragmatic, wants to make the best out of the lot she was born into. Secretly married to Frank.

Albert Chen – Chinese-American, late 20s to early 30s - A self-proclaimed product of “tiger style” parents, Albert is the family “underachiever,” having only been a concert cellist, Harvard graduate, and now software engineer. Resentfully ruled by his deeply ingrained Eastern values and his family’s unrealistic expectations, Albert finally snaps after being passed over for a promotion at work, switching his default from “model minority” to “rage against the machine.”
Jennifer Chen – Chinese-American, 30s - Albert’s older sister, the “overachiever” to Albert’s “under.” A former concert pianist, Harvard graduate, and now doctor, Jenny is a classic high-strung “type A” type, with a rigid and detailed timeline of life goals to check off, and she is WINNING! That is until her deadbeat boyfriend breaks up with her, wreaking utter chaos on her carefully-crafted 5-year plan, and sending her entire identity, sense of achievement, and fundamental self-worth into a tailspin.
Russ the Bus / Reggie / Customs Guy – white, 30s
Tzi Chuan / Melvin / Dad / General Tso – Asian, 40s to 60s
Therapist / Mom / Cousin Chen / Matchmaker – Asian, 40s to 60s

SHARON F, 50s-70s, any ethnicity. Life-long midwesterner, friendly, chatty, tries to make everyone feel welcome and comfortable. Sheltered, but curious, naive, but open-minded - and much smarter than anyone has ever given her credit for. She has an untapped thirst for adventure and a sense of vitality.
ROBYN F, 50s-70s, any ethnicity - Just arrived in Iowa from the Bronx and feeling a bit fish-out-of-water as a vegan lesbian who grows her own medicinal marijuana. Not anti-social, but deeply private and hesitant to open up, which can seem a little sharp or closed-off in contrast to Sharon’s open chattiness. Guarding some secrets from her past… and present.
