BREAKDOWN

PYGMALION

[HENRY HIGGINS] (ON OFFER) Male, early 40s. Any ethnicity. Energetic and active, Higgins combines intellectual brilliance with a passion for scientific pursuits, particularly phonetics. He channels his passions and emotional life into his work, he covers his discomfort with a bombastic manner and vocabulary until his fascination with Eliza forces him to face himself. RP British accent.

[ELIZA DOOLITTLE] (ON OFFER) Female, 20s, Any ethnicity. Poor, barely educated, working at the lowest rung of what’s available to a woman in London, she has carefully protected herself from the pitfalls of her station. Innately intelligent and resilient, she knows she has potential and more to offer than society allows. In meeting Higgins she finds the tools (education) to create the life she desires and morphs from a destitute flower girl to someone capable of navigating high society while unwittingly becoming a pawn in Higgins's social experiment. Cockney and then RP British accent.

[COLONEL PICKERING] Male, 40s. Any ethnicity. A socially solitary man who has hidden from life, with his focused passion in linguistics. He is a high-ranking military man who has just returned to England and is figuring out where he fits into the world when he meets Higgins and Eliza. Together, they form a little family unit that gives him new life and purpose. He is easily amused and shocked; shy but longs to feel a part of the world in a new and meaningful way. RP British accent. He will also serve as a narrator in the play.

[MRS. HIGGINS / MRS. PEARCE] Female, 60s. Any ethnicity. MRS HIGGINS is Henry’s mother, a fiercely independent, highly educated, easily amused, wealthy, enlightened, and insightful woman. She provides the moral compass in this world, with her astute observations and graceful demeanor. RP British accent. MRS. PEARCE is Henry’s steadfast housekeeper. She embodies practicality and propriety. Her initial apprehensions about Eliza entering the household give way to a protective and supportive dynamic. Her unwavering dedication to maintaining decorum positions her as a critical stabilizing force within the household. Irish or Scottish accent. She will also serve as a narrator in the play.

[FREDDY EYNSFORD HILL / ALFRED DOOLITTLE] Male, 40s. Any ethnicity. FREDDY a bachelor who is enamored with Eliza, embodying youthful enthusiasm and devotion in contrast with the superficiality of upper-class decorum. Descended from an upper-class British family, he and his sister are now living on a meager annual allowance that severely limits his social opportunities. Though he should have been married long ago, along with his sister, his social ineptitude, lack of sophistication and general shyness has become a barrier to him. RP British accent. ALFRED DOOLITTLE is Eliza's father, a philosophical dustman with a flair for rhetoric and unconventional morality. Despite his irresponsible nature, Doolittle's eloquence and lack of conscience charm Higgins and Pickering, leading to his unforeseen elevation to middle-class that brings him respectability but unexpected unhappiness, as he is ill-suited to the demands of wealth and propriety. Cockney accent. He will also serve as a narrator in the play.

[CLARA EYNSFORD HILL] Female, 30s. Any ethnicity. CLARA is Freddy’s sister. Her bravado, often unconvincing, masks insecurity and vulnerability about her place within society, as she struggles to reconcile her genteel upbringing and social aspirations with the challenges of her family’s dwindling resources. Over time, she evolves as she immerses herself in critical readings, notably H. G. Wells, allowing her to find purpose beyond superficial social acceptance. RP British accent. Doubles as an Irish maid and will serve as a narrator in the play.
