BREAKDOWN

Woman 1:
20s-30s, woman of color. Will play multiple roles, including: Samantha--a spotted salamander not sure she's ready for the spring mating season; Jane Gray--wife of botanist Asa Gray, guardian of his legacy, and buried at Mount Auburn); and Ellie--a lonely young woman who finds wonder and companionship on her first day of birdwatching; plus roles in two other plays still being developed.

Woman 2:
30s-50s, preferably cast as a woman of color. Will play multiple roles, including: Botanist Asa Gray--the most prominent American botanist of the 19th century, an important supporter of Darwin, with an interest in his legacy; Kate--a blind birdwatcher (who happens to be married to a deaf birder; plus roles in two others plays still being developed.

Man 1:
20s-30s, man of color. Will play multiple roles, including Elizabeth Agassiz, a writer and scientist, co-founder of Radcliffe, who was married to Louis Agassiz, the most popular scientist of the mid-19th century. She has worked hard to promote and preserve the family name; Fred--a single-dad and birdwatcher, who finds a little bit of sanity in the time he spends birding; Jeremy--a young male salamander hoping his first mating season is a success; plus roles in two other plays still being developed.

Man 2:
30s-50s, man of color. Will play multiple roles, including Louis Agassiz, a Swiss-born naturalist who was the most popular scientist in the mid-19th century and who strongly opposed Darwin. Charismatic and in love with the sound of his own voice and ideas; Dan--an expert birdwatcher who is starting to lose his hearing (and he is married to a birder who is blind); Mac--a male salamander with more than a few successful mating seasons under his belt. Perhaps the Lando Calrissian of spotted salamanders; plus roles in two other plays being developed.

For all of these roles, flexibility is a must. The actors will be playing multiple roles in an outdoor, natural setting at a Cemetery, with performers moving from site to site for each play. Previous experience/involvement with new play development is a big plus, as is previous outdoor performance work. Many rehearsals will be outdoors, on a variety of terrain.
