SUMMARY: Maddie, rebellious and precocious, is struggling to balance her burgeoning sexuality with the responsibility of supporting her bereft mother, a woman who finds solace in the folding of origami paper cranes. Maddie escapes by entering into a tumultuous relationship with Julie, an older woman. Julie's best friend and one-time lover Amy, in a renewed search for true love, enters into a dangerous S&M relationship with a mysterious man protecting a dark secret. A delicate and insightful story of love, loss, longing and escape, PAPER CRANES tells the story of a small group of people in a modern American town who connect through a chain of surprising relationships, each desperate to break free from a haunted past in order to find a better future.
SEEKING:
Mona:
Caucasian Female. (early to mid 40s) – Poised, witty, distant, smart, likeable. A recent widow raising a teenage daughter, is lonely and unable to move forward from the death of her husband. Trying to be put-together and in control on the outside, yet lost and heartbroken on the inside. Vulnerable with an acerbic wit.
David:
Caucasian Male. (mid 30s) - A sweet, loving and gentle guy who masks grieving a lost girlfriend by seeking out kinky, anonymous sex. Strong and vulnerable all at once, haunted. No nudity.
Julie:
Any Ethnicities, Female. (mid 30s) Bubbly, outgoing and energetic, Julie is Amy’s best friend. She is comfortable with her sexuality as a lesbian and can have a more typical butch edge. Funny and upbeat. Still harboring feelings for her ex-girlfriend. May be seen in bra & underwear, but no nudity. Actress must be comfortable kissing another woman.
Maddie:
Caucasian Female. (18+ to play late teens-early 20s.) Smart, edgy, strong, confident, aggressive, yet naïve and idealistic. Must look late teens, about to enter college. Her mother is definitely surprised to learn that she is gay, so may seem more feminine, or tomboyish to the outside world. May be seen in bra & underwear, but no nudity. Actress must be comfortable kissing another woman.
