Joey Evans:

Late 20s – mid 30s. Intensely charming, smooth, handsome womanizer. A band singer. A draft-dodger. Always playing both sides against the middle. He must, somewhere though, have a heart. He aches to be cared for by a woman, but can’t commit to anything or anyone long enough to grow up. A CROONER, and a great one. Should move very well. Baritone.

Vera Simpson:

Late 40s - late 50s. A gal from the wrong side of the tracks who has made it in Chicago. Married successfully, if not well. Has convinced herself she’s made peace with the bargain she’s made, only to discover love and vulnerability can still knock you off your pins. Wry, self-deprecating. Attractive, funny, with great charm. GREAT SINGER, chest voice with head.

Linda English:

Mid - late 20s. Smart, snappy, observant. Pretty but not necessarily gorgeous, with a great figure. Perceptive enough to see Joey for who he is, but not worldly or wise enough to avoid him. Witty and caring. Anything but a sap. Soprano.

Prentis Simpson:

50s - early 60s. Vera's husband. Attractive, ruthless, wealthy, but not too particular about how he amassed or keeps his fortune. Ownership is everything to him. Can turn on the charm when he needs to, and turns it off just as quickly. Runs his son and his wife as he runs his business – with an iron fist. Baritone.

Eric Simpson:

Early 20s. Must feel younger than Joey. Vera's stepson. Prentis’s son from his first marriage. Young, idealistic. Has great fondness for Vera, and sees his father clearly. There's hope for Eric. Baritenor.

Paul:

Late 20s. Linda's boyfriend. Enlisted, fighting for the country. Idealistic; the good guy. Everything Joey isn’t … and, of course, the one who loses his girl. Baritenor.

Gladys Bumps:

Late 20s - late 30s. Club singer, Chicago perennial and Joey's singing partner more than once. She’s seen the way he works, knows all the ropes, and understands what anyone who gets involved with Joey is in for. Sexy, but in an obvious way. Belter.

Ted Logan:

30s - early 40s. Bandleader who gave Joey his start, but pushes him on his way when he gets too fresh. Tall, attractive, charming and warm. Baritone.

Helen Logan:

30s. Ted's wife. Fond of Joey. Unclear how fond she’s been of Joey in the past. Warm, maternal.

Walter Winchell:

40s-50s. The ubiquitous newspaper reporter and broadcaster, our guide through the era. Wry and witty. Character singer.

Mike:

50s - early 60s. Club owner. Tough, protecting his turf. Character singer.

Statement of casting personnel: “WE STRONGLY ENCOURAGE PERFORMERS OF ALL ETHNICITIES TO ATTEND THIS CALL.”
