A world-renowned string quartet struggles to prepare for their highest-profile performance ever just when the violist and founder of the quartet mysteriously disappears. A young woman turns up, wows the group with her dazzling musical skill, and is hired as the replacement. Her gifts inspire the musicians and they decide on short notice to abandon their friendly Pachelbel Canon program and replace it with Beethoven’s difficult Opus 131. The rehearsal room becomes a pressure cooker as passions rise, personalities clash and the musicians are forced to tackle the ephemeral nature of their life's work.
NOTE: Actors DO NOT need to know how to play an instrument. However, musical knowledge is helpful.
Seeking:
Alan:
(mid- to late 40s) Second violinist of the Lazara Quartet. Divorced, as a result of multiple philanderings on tour. Sensitive, attractive and masculine in a comfortable way. He has a great sense of humor, low key, appealing. Quite content as a second violinist – no need for the spotlight. Attracted to Grace.
Carl:
(mid-40s to early 50) Cellist of the Lazara Quartet. Cancer survivor, husband, and father of two young children. No-nonsense, pragmatic, hates to argue, but loves a wisecrack. Unsentimental about the business of making music. Big guy – big voice (like a cello). A decent guy. The quartet’s grounding force.
Dorian:
(mid-40’s) Former violist and co-founder of the Lazara Quartet (also a violinist). Charismatic, brilliant, sensual, intuitive, brutally honest about music. Manic depressive and visionary. Former lover of Elliot. Youthful, magnetic personality. Confident in his sexuality, gay, appealing. People are immediately drawn to him- he is very alive and in the moment. Recently fired and currently missing.
