SEEKING

Equity actors for roles in ON THIS SIDE OF THE WORLD by Paolo Tirol and Noam Shapiro (see breakdown).

PREPARATION

One full song, Preferably Contemporary Musical Theatre that tells a story (no longer than 1.5 minute). Connect the words to character and show us an arc. Please bring sheet music for the accompanist marked as you would like it played, and bring your book in case we ask for a variation.

Strong storytelling and movement skills are required. Solid vocals and musicality are a must for all roles. Experience with intermediate vocal harmonies is a definite plus.

All actors also play ENSEMBLE roles: bratty kids, immigrants at a naturalization ceremony, backup dancers, church ladies, and diner patrons.

All characters are Filipino and Filipino American. We aim to assemble a cast that reflects the diversity of the Filipino immigrant community in the United States. Actors of all body types, skin tones, and age ranges are encouraged to submit.

DHANG (SOPRANO 1) - Filipino Female; Early to late 30s. Solid legit to B5 and belt (or mix belt) to E5 required; has a heavy Filipino accent. She is flying to the U.S. to marry a man she met online. Working-class urban; fun-loving and uninhibited. Also plays LUCY, a nurse in a hospice; ANNA, a U.S. citizen who was paid to be in a green card marriage; MARIVIC, a gossipy church lady; and BRIANNA, a precocious second-generation Filipino-American, at ages six, sixteen, and 26.

KAYLA (SOPRANO 2) - Filipino Female; Early to late 20s. Solid G3 and belt to E5 required; ability to riff a plus; has a heavy Filipino accent. She is flying to the U.S. to attend a graduate program at her dream school. Cosmopolitan and privileged; confident and ambitious. Also plays ESTRELLA, a caregiver for an elderly American man; DEE-DEE, a spoiled brat pursuing a fashion degree; MARITESS, a self-righteous church lady; and JOEY, a woman on her first Christmas Eve in the United States.

JEMMALYN (MEZZO) - Filipino Female; Mid 30s to mid 40s. Solid low F#3 and belt (or strong mix belt) to E5 required; solid E3 and belt (or strong mix belt) to F#5 a plus; has a light Filipino accent. She is flying to the U.S. to start a three-year contract as a high school teacher. From a provincial city; introspective and selfless. Also plays JENNY, a talkative E.S.L. student with a crush on her teacher; NINGNING, a nanny caring for a child not her own; and LOLA NELLY, a grandmother preparing Sunday dinner with her grandson.

ELITO (TENOR 1) - Filipino Male; Early to mid 30s. Solid A4 required; light lyric tenor quality preferred; jazz vocal sensibilities are a plus. He is flying to the U.S. to reunite with a mother he hasn’t seen in 30 years. From a small rural town; traditional and simple. Also plays JOSE, a young man preparing Sunday dinner with his grandmother; RON, a grad student who has just received news about his dad’s terminal illness; MIGGY, a new arrival gleefully capitalizing on gay Americans’ fetishization of Asian men; and DAD, a young father who is missing the birth of his child.

MACKY (TENOR 2) - Filipino Male; Late 20s to late 30s. Strong B2 and sustained G4 belt required. He is flying to the U.S. to start a corporate job that is sponsoring his work visa. Middle-class urban, but quickly moving up; possibly getting by more on looks and luck than on education and skill. Also plays MR. LEGARDA, a man being naturalized as a U.S. citizen; VINZO, a Manila film and TV star trying to break into American showbiz; and PAPA, a father who’s missing his daughter’s first day of school.

ABET (BARITENOR) - Filipino Male; Early 40s or older. Solid B2 and belt to G4 required; ability to riff a plus. He is flying to the U.S. with plans of skipping out on his tourist visa. Middle-class, from a provincial city; desperate, down on his luck, but now with newfound hope. Also plays TITO, an uncle sending Stateside swag to his family back home; KUYA MAR, an elderly undocumented immigrant working at a diner; and TATAY, a father who’s missing his daughter’s wedding day.
