Arnie the Doughnut is a family show about a doughnut looking for his way in life, and the lonely uninspired man who becomes his best friend.

Casting/audition notes: This is a show for sunny, funny, smart actors who sing like a Boston creme. The right material for this audition is contemporary, funny, precise. Think Jason Robert Brown, William Finn, etc. Looking for actor/singers singer/actors for the following roles:

Arnie the Doughnut (M)– 20's - young 40's. A nai?ve, optimistic, original?thinker; Full of questions. Fun and spontaneous; a lover of life, and a bit overly dramatic. "He hopes to be the Very Best Doughnut he can be."

Mr. Bing/puppets; as needed in bakery -- (M) late 30's - mid 50's. A well?intentioned but conventional rule follower who doesnt have much fun in his life; he eats a few too many doughnuts and is a bit out of shape and self?conscious. He learns to overcome his fear of change.

Mrs. Plute – (F) late 30s - 60s. Maker and enforcer of rules, she dominates those around her. An intimidating bully with a smile; (may be played the the actress playing Jelly Doughnut et al.)

French Cruller/Doughnut Hole/Ronnie: (F) late 20s -- late 40s
-- French Cruller – a somewhat vain and self-absorbed doughnut with a French accent.
-- Ronnie – Mr. Bing’s neighbor, a jogger, and dog?lover. Also a stoic.
-- Doughnut Holes –little gigglers who sing back?ups (puppets)

Powdered Doughnut/ Doughnut Hole/Baker/Sheila (F) early 20s -- early 40s.
-- Powdered Doughnut – a girly, insecure ingenue. A beauty of a doughnut.
-- Doughnut Holes –little gigglers who sing back?ups (puppets)
-- Baker – a jolly figure who loves to make people happy
-- Sheila – Mr. Bing’s neighbor, a gardener, a frumpy and shy nature lover

Jelly Doughnut/ Doughnut Hole
-- Jelly -- Not the brightest doughnut in the box. But supportive and down to Earth
-- Doughnut Holes –little gigglers who sing back?ups (puppets)

HARRY WEINBERG – 60s+. A retired kosher butcher. Kindly, mischievous, uses humor to deflect any questions that hit too close to home. He has been through a lot more than he is ready to reveal. BARITONE

FRANNIE WEINBERG – Late 50s+. Harry’s wife. Opinionated. Biting sense of humor but with hidden reserves of affection. Fiercely loyal to her husband.
MEZZO SOPRANO

BARBARA KATSEF – Late 20s – Early 30s. A writing teacher. She has many questions about her Jewish heritage, the answers to which she will doggedly pursue. A lesbian, but this is not immediately obvious. MEZZO/SOPRANO–BELT

Twelve year-old Pipio hunts for his lost mother among the street-kids, gangs and drug-lords that rule Rio’s favelas – the toughest slums in the hottest place on Earth. The boy’s search for identity becomes a struggle for survival in this re-invention of Charles Dickens’ Oliver Twist set in modern-day Brazil – a colorful, character-filled Carnaval tale presented by the Escola de Samba Foltando!

Casting Director’s note: “Seeking actors with a contemporary pop/R&B/Hip-Hop sound who can really move and feel the vibration of the Carnaval culture in their bodies. All roles, except Pipio and Neves, will also be part of the ensemble.”

PIPIO:
Male. 13-14. Latino, African-American or Mixed ethnicity. Cute with a fresh face, smaller frame and quick. Naive but resolute, running on faith and instinct. His determination to find his mother makes him fickle and helplessly vulnerable to empty promises. He is an innocent in a city of beauty and danger. Voice should either be pre- or post-transition, but not in transition (boy soprano or young tenor). [Can be an actor over 14 who can realistically play a 13-14 year old, or a bona fide 11-14 year old.]

SAMSON:
Male. 22-28. Latino or African-American ethnicity. Tall, muscular, strong and sexy. A drug-lord and child of the ghetto, he has worked his way up to this position using any means he can. His emotions simmer underneath the surface until he explodes with rage. He has big dreams but even bigger nightmares. Baritone.

PANTERA:
Male. 17-20. Latino/Hispanic ethnicity. Young, muscular, handsome and sexy. An ambitious street-kid with an arrogant street-smart nature, he can act tough but when push becomes shove, he is quickly exposed as the ‘not so tough’ guy he really is inside, allowing others to do his dirty work. High tenor and Rapper.

FERRARO:
Male. 28-35. Caucasian, Latino, Mediterranean, African-American or Mixed ethnicity. A young, but mature police captain with a threatening stature. Part of him has integrity when it comes to cleaning up the Favelas and seeing justice done, but underneath the bravado is a devilish, unstoppable machine determined to climb up the system’s ladder, letting nothing get in the way. Bari-tenor.

MAFALDA/LULU:
Male. 20-30. Mediterranean, Latino, African-American or Mixed ethnicity. Mafalda: A transsexual in transition, he’s very effeminate and fun. Always taunted as a boy but knowing things were never right, (s)he has saved up all her life to be who (s)he really is: a woman. Obstinate, focused and with a no-nonsense assertiveness, she won’t take life too seriously – except her true self. Lulu: A rival drug-lord to Samson, very well-off and powerful. Bari-tenor with falsetto.

RUI:
Male. 13-18. Latino or African-American ethnicity. A young, fit and strong street-kid who won’t trust anyone and has a jealous streak. Pipio seems to be a threat to him and he always feels he has to stay on guard, trusting no one. Youthful tenor and rapper.

NEVES:
Female. 18-26. Latino, African-American, or Mixed ethnicity. Samson’s girlfriend. Young, voluptuous, sexy and very beautiful. She has trouble trusting men in her life, except for Samson, who has shown her love and guidance since he rescued her from a violent and abusive relationship with her father. Although beautiful, she doesn’t see herself as that; life in the Favelas has taught her that there isn’t much for her beyond their borders, so she puts all her love and dreams in performing at Carnaval. Having children and becoming a mother are not on her agenda. Contralto with high belt.

MOMO:
Female. 18-29. Asian, Mediterranean, Latino, African-American, Caucasian or Mixed ethnicity. Fortune-teller. Heavyset. Fun, clairvoyant, spiritual. Has assimilated comfortably into this Brazilian society. Trustworthy and comforting; the person you go to for guidance. Contralto.

OMARTA:
Female. 18-30. Latino, African-American or Mixed ethnicity. Young, thin attractive seamstress. Industrious. Takes winning seriously. Loves to gossip and is a bit of a trouble-maker, quick to divulge a secret or 2 & share personal rumors. Also tries to be funny, which backfires most of the time. Mezzo soprano.

FICTION:
Female. 13-18. Latino, African-American or Mixed ethnicity. Thin, cute teenaged street-kid. Precocious and persistent in her need for love. At once, she is attracted to Pipio’s innocence, and becomes his surrogate older sister, defensive and overly protective of him. The street has taught her not to trust anyone. Youthful belt and rapper.

MAGDALENA:
Female. 18-30. Latino, African-American ethnicity. Character woman of the Favela. Mezzo soprano.

OXUM:
Female. 16-30. Latino, Mediterranean, African-American or Mixed ethnicity. Thin , flowing foil to Neves. Ageless Goddess of Water, follows King Momo, helping the innocent of Rio. High belt.

God wants Bonnie to save the souls of her 23 Ohio Kindergarten students, and if that risks losing her job, or triggers the occasional shooting back pain – well, so be it. Bonnie’s new chiropractor, Neil, sees things differently; in fact, as a gay new-ager and recent transplant from Brooklyn, Neil sees most everything differently. Still, he’s flabbergasted when his first treatment turns out to be a miracle cure and instead of thanking him, Bonnie insists he “put her back.” Of course when Neil refuses to “unfix” her, they're off ... and another epic battle in the Culture Wars is ON.

BONNIE:
Female. (late 20's to late 30's) An Evangelical Christian who’s been placed on administrative probation for proselytizing to her Kindergarten students. Outwardly sunny, quick-witted, polite, determined to be positive, she is also riddled with chronic muscle tension and with guilt for what she considers an unforgivable sin. Her body is a bit of a mystery to her: who knows what it will do next? Still, she accepts her suffering bravely. Above all, Bonnie tries. And she loves those children. [VOCAL RANGE – Mezzo with Belt, G3 to F5, bring contemporary showtune.)

NEIL:
Male. (late 20's to late 30's) Neil arrives back in his native Ohio full ofgood will, enthusiasm, and a true talent for chiropractic. He’s also a gay atheist who’s been living in NYC, so when the practice he purchased shrivels, he can’t help but wonder if the problem is good old American bigotry. Or is it him? Bright, self-effacing, easily fascinated, Neil rarely misses an opportunity for self-doubt. It probably doesn’t help that he smokes a little pot, or that he feels himself under the watchful, disapproving eye of the skeleton in the corner. [VOCAL RANGE – Tenor with Falsetto, C3 to C5, bring contemporary showtune.)

NICK:

Must be able to play the broken vulnerability AND the sexy fun loving girl. May contain brief nudity.

CHRIS:
17 and the hottest and most popular guy in school. Any ethnicity. His bravado, charisma and dedication to being “cool” mask his feelings of insecurities and vulnerability. Role contains brief nudity.
