Director’s original narrative and concept for this production brings to this song cycle a new character-driven context, illuminating the intricate back-story and relationships among a single family through innovative staging and design imagery. As a daughter returns to move her mother, a stroke victim, out of their family home, the two wrestle with the ghosts of their father / husband and brother / son, re-living and coming to terms with their mythologized past.

Seeking (all roles are available):

Note: All actors should have excellent musicianship and be comfortable working with stylized movement. All song assignments subject to change. All roles except Woman require complex harmonies.

Woman:

60s. Elegant, fragile, but feisty – a stroke has rendered her unable to communicate verbally (at least in the real life of the play). Present on stage throughout. Needs strong physical presence, with some comic ability. Sings “Awaiting You” (key and voice-type negotiable).

Daughter:

Late 30s/40s. Single. Pragmatic. Escapes facing life by serving the needs of others. Isolated. Primary songs: “Come to Jesus”, “Life is but a Dream”, “How Can I Lose You”. Soprano.

Husband:

50s. Idealistic, romantic, dominant patriarch whose expectations of life don’t match the reality of his family’s actions. Strong comedic edge. Primary songs: “Hero & Leander”, “Icarus” (as the character Daedalus), “Sisyphus”. Tenor.

Son:

31. The eternal voyager, a lost young man striving for idealism without his father’s sense of convictions. Primary songs: “Pegasus” (as the character Bellerophon), “Saturn Returns”, “Icarus”. Tenor.

Matthew/Others:

20s. Multi-character track, including Daughter’s boyfriend. Primary song: “Come to Jesus.” Baritenor.

Pegasus/Others:

Any age. Multi-character track. Primary songs: “Pegasus” (as the character Pegasus), “There's a Shout”. Mezzo/Gospel belter.

Gadfly/Others:

Any age. Multi-character track. Primary songs: “Pegasus” (as the character Gadfly), “Migratory V”. Soprano.

Theatre’s statement: “We strongly encourage actors from all ethnic backgrounds to audition; all roles are open to any ethnicity.”
