SYNOPSIS:
The Tony® Award-nominated musical MILLION DOLLAR QUARTET is set on December 4, 1956, when an extraordinary twist of fate brought Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins and Elvis Presley together at Sun Records in Memphis for what would be one of the greatest jam sessions ever. MILLION DOLLAR QUARTET brings that legendary December night to life with an irresistible tale of broken promises, secrets, betrayal and celebrations that is both poignant and funny.
Relive the era with the smash-hit sensation featuring an incredible score of rock ’n’ roll, gospel, R&B and country hits, performed live onstage by world-class actors and musicians. Showcased hit songs include “Blue Suede Shoes,” “Fever,” “Walk the Line,” “Sixteen Tons,” “Who Do You Love?,” “Great Balls of Fire,” “Folsom Prison Blues,” “Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On,” “Hound Dog,” and more.
Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, Johnny Cash and Fluke all require playing instruments. See submission instructions for each role.
SEEKING:
Elvis Presley (20s–30s, Male-Identifying): Charismatic singer/guitarist at the start of his legendary career. This is Elvis in his early 20s—young, magnetic, and full of promise. In the production, he performs: “Memories Are Made of This,” “That’s All Right,” “Long Tall Sally,” “Peace in the Valley,” “Party,” and “Hound Dog.”
Submission: Submit a video of yourself playing guitar and singing one of the Elvis songs from the show or alternatively, any other Elvis song.
Jerry Lee Lewis (20s–30s, Male-Identifying): A wild, electrifying piano prodigy and rock & roll icon, Jerry Lee was famously known as the “Last Man Standing.” Requires strong comedic chops, boundless energy, and expert-level piano skills in his signature style. Songs include: “Real Wild Child,” “Great Balls of Fire,” and “Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On.”
Submission: Please include a video of yourself playing piano and singing “Great Balls of Fire” or “Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On.”
Carl Perkins (Mid 20s–Late 30s, Male-Identifying): Groundbreaking singer and lead guitarist, known as the godfather of rockabilly. Best known for “Blue Suede Shoes,” Carl brings a gritty, authentic energy to the stage. Performs: “Matchbox,” “Who Do You Love?,” “My Babe,” and “See You Later, Alligator.”
Submission: Please submit a video of yourself playing guitar and singing “Blue Suede Shoes,” “Matchbox,” or a rockabilly tune of your choice.
Johnny Cash (Late 20s–40s, Male-Identifying): The Man in Black at the beginning of his storied journey. Tall, brooding, and distinct, Johnny commands attention with his iconic sound. Performs: “Folsom Prison Blues,” “Sixteen Tons,” “I Walk the Line,” and “Riders in the Sky.” Must resemble and sound like Cash without veering into impersonation.
Submission: Send a video of yourself playing guitar and singing “Folsom Prison Blues,” “I Walk the Line,” or another Johnny Cash song.
Sam Phillips (Mid 30s–40s, Male-Identifying, Non-Singing Role): Visionary founder of Sun Records and a pivotal force in American music. Charismatic, shrewd, and passionate, Sam discovered and nurtured the legends of rock & roll.
Submission: Submit a video reading the side. Non-singing role.
Dyanne (20s–Early 40s, Female-Identifying, Any Ethnicity): Elvis’s girlfriend and an ambitious, talented singer. Smart, poised, and ahead of her time, she delivers sultry vocals and impressive range. Performs: “Fever” (alto), “I Hear You Knockin’,” and soprano backup on “Riders in the Sky.”
Submission: Submit 32-bar cuts of two era-appropriate songs or I Hear You Knocking or Fever. Accompaniment tracks will be available in the Google drive on Monday, August 4th.
W.S. Fluke Holland (20s–40s, Male-Identifying): Onstage drummer and Carl Perkins’ longtime collaborator. Quiet but musically driven, Fluke lets his playing do the talking. Must be a confident, rhythmic drummer with strong ensemble instincts.
Submission: Please send a video of yourself drumming to a song from the era.
Jay Perkins - CAST (20s–40s, Male-Identifying): Carl Perkins’ brother and bassist. Loyal and low-key, Jay doesn’t engage in studio drama, but shines during performances with flair and skill. Often performs tricks with his upright bass—spinning, dancing, or supporting fellow musicians. Must be an experienced and dynamic bass player.
Submission: Send a video showcasing your bass playing (rockabilly or songs from the show preferred) and performance tricks.
