Note: All characters will double as prisoners and remain onstage for the majority of the show. Names in parentheses indicate specific doubled characters.
Don Quixote (Alonso Quijana, Miguel de Cervantes): ROLE HAS BEEN CAST. Baritone.
Cervantes is an actor, playwright, and tax collector. Quijana is an aging gentleman who believes himself to be Don Quixote. Quixote is a would-be knight errant, a romantic, and a madman.
Sancho (Manservant): Tenor.
Quixote’s loyal squire and sidekick. Funny, pragmatic. “A fat little bag stuffed with proverbs.”
Aldonza: Soprano with belt.
A servant and part-time prostitute. Jaded, defiant, a survivor. Her rough exterior masks a gentle heart. Quixote imagines her to be his lady, Dulcinea.
Padre: Tenor.
A kindly cleric. Thoughtful, sympathetic to Don Quixote, but conflicted.
The Innkeeper (The Governor): Bass.
The Innkeeper is kind and sympathetic to Don Quixote until his inn is threatened. Married to Maria. The Governor is the imposing leader of the inmates.
Dr. Sanson Carrasco (The Duke): Baritone.
Dr. Carrasco is haughty, controlling, and engaged to Don Quixote’s niece, Antonia. The Duke is a disillusioned prisoner who dislikes Cervantes and his stories.
Maria: Mezzo.
No-nonsense, exasperated, and pessimistic. Married to the Innkeeper.
Antonia: Soprano.
Sweet but self-centered. Niece to Alonso Quijana and engaged to Dr. Carrasco.
Housekeeper: Mezzo.
Strong, religious, holds tightly to her convictions. Works as a housekeeper for Alonso Quijana. Possible double with the Barber.
Pedro: Baritone.
The leader of the muleteers. Rough and ruthless. Guitar skills a plus.
Anselmo: Tenor.
A rough and sturdy muleteer. Beautiful voice. Guitar skills a plus.
Tenorio (Captain of the Inquisition):
As Tenorio, another muleteer. As the Captain, a cruel and imposing leader of the Spanish Inquisition. Guitar skills a plus.
Paco (Monk):
As Paco, a rough and sturdy muleteer, but perhaps the youngest of the group. As Monk, a member of the Spanish Inquisition. Guitar skills a plus.
Juan (Barber, Monk): Tenor.
As Juan, a rough and sturdy muleteer. As Barber, a traveling barber. As Monk, a member of the Spanish Inquisition. Guitar skills a plus.

Usnavi de la Vega: (Male, Latino, 20-30s)
Charismatic and funny. A likeable leading man and can be awkward at times. Owns a small bodega in Washington Heights. Abuela Claudia, the neighborhood matriarch, practically raised him when his parents both died during his early childhood. He dreams of moving back to the Dominican Republic. He is in love with Vanessa. Extremely strong singer/rapper/dancer.
Nina Rosario: (Female, Latina, 19)
A first-generation college student and has just returned home from her first year at Stanford University. She is the daughter of Kevin and Camila Rosario. The community looks to her as a symbol of success, as someone who has achieved great things outside of “the Heights”. Carries the weight of her community and family on her shoulders. Very strong singer with soprano belt range.
Benny: (Male, Black/non-Latino, 20-30s)
Best friends with Usnavi, and in love with Nina. Benny is a driver for Kevin Rosario's dispatch. He grew up having to make his own way and Kevin took him under his wing. Benny hopes to someday own his own car service and represent the hard work and optimism of a hopeful entrepreneur. Baritenor. Excellent singer, rapper, and dancer.
Vanessa: (Female, Latina, 20s)
Stylist at Daniela’s salon. She longs to get out of Washington Heights. Hardened in part by a troubled home life but maintains a hopeful outlook. Close friends with Nina. Has a soft spot for Usnavi. Excellent singer/belter and dancer.
Abuela Claudia: (Female, Latina, 50s+)
The warm (sometimes funny) matriarch of the neighborhood and is everyone’s Abuela. Both strong and wise, she has lived in the Heights longer than anyone and practically raised Usnavi after his parents died. Strong belt.
Sonny: (Male, Latino, 18+ to play mid-teens)
Usnavi’s idealistic and optimistic, younger cousin who works at the bodega. He has a genuine desire to improve the inequities of his community and emulate Usnavi. Strong comedic abilities. Excellent singer/rapper and strong mover.
Daniela: (Female, Latina 30s-40s)
Savvy, strong-willed, straight talking owner of the salon next to Usnavi’s bodega. Bold, sassy, funny, enjoys banter and demands respect. Her business is a victim of gentrification and is forcing her to move to the Bronx. A mentor to Vanessa and Carla in a tough love style. Great mover and great singer with a strong belt.
Carla: (Female, Latina, 20s-30s)
Works at Daniela’s salon. She is a supportive friend and looks up to Daniela. Some would say she’s a loyal sidekick. She can be naive at times but is not a ditz. Strong comedic timing. Great singer with a strong belt and mix. Great mover.
Kevin Rosario: (Male, Latino, middle aged)
Owner of Rosario’s Car Service, Camila’s husband, and Nina’s father. After emigrating from Puerto Rico, he has worked hard his entire life to build his business and provide for his family. He is stubborn and fiercely proud of his daughter's achievements. Great singer.
Camila Rosario: (Female, Latina, middle aged)
Co-owner of Rosario's Car Service and has a quiet, but strong hold on her husband Kevin. She fell in love with him at 19 and emigrated together to New York to open their business and raise Nina. Great singer.
Piragua Guy: (Male, Latino, 30s+)
Makes his living walking the streets of Washington Heights selling flavored shaved ice. He is a representative of the islands so many of the residents once called home. A very strong presence in the community. Excellent tenor. Good mover.
Graffiti Pete: (Male, Any Ethnicity, 20s+)
A graffiti artist who’s good friends with Sonny, much to Usnavi’s dismay. A comedic nemesis of Usnavi and tags up Usnavi’s bodega. Always carries a boombox and spray cans. Skilled hip hop and/or break dancer. Strong rapper and singer.
Residents of Washington Heights: (All ages, all ethnicities, all gender identities/presentation)
Residents make up the community of Washington Heights. The ensemble is heavily used in the storytelling of the show. Excellent dancers in street and salsa styles. Excellent singers.
