SEEKING:

MIA - early–mid 30s, East AAPI (F). The middle child and black sheep of the family. Raw, soulful, charismatic, darkly funny pop singer/songwriter and sexual assault survivor. Wants badly to heal and bring the two broken halves of her world together. Mezzo with smoky belt. Guitar/piano skills helpful but not mandatory.

CHARLOTTE - mid-30s, East AAPI (F). The oldest. High-achieving, high-functioning doctor, mom, wife and multi-tasker extraordinaire. Tightly wound, fiercely protective and a little judgmental. Sneakily funny and easily hurt. Secretly wonders if her way of being in the world (and her complicity in her family’s silence) is wrong. Soprano with pop/rock belt.

DANIEL - late 20s, East AAPI (M). The youngest. On the outside, the golden child — highly intelligent, easygoing, ever the peacemaker. On the inside, lost, restless, desperate for something more. Knows his family is dysfunctional & has no idea how to fix it. Tenor with pop stylings.

SYLVIA - 60s, East AAPI (F). Mother to Charlotte, Mia and Daniel; wife to Henry. A force to be reckoned with: charming, judgmental, charismatic, a little terrifying. Repressed, sensual, sometimes violent. Powerful, but rarely the final decisionmaker: traditional Chinese patriarchy hangs over her and her daughters. Alto with belt.

HENRY - 60s, East AAPI (M). Father to Charlotte, Mia and Daniel; husband to Sylvia. Quiet, observant, steady, but complicit in and a reliable reinforcer of his family’s silences. Externally, the final decisionmaker a la traditional Chinese culture. Encourages resilience & survival over healing — and willing to shut down communication to get there. Baritenor.

YOUNG MIA - 20s, East AAPI (F). MIA at 14, the age of her assault — a raw, funny, mouthy, broken teen. Expresses all the emotions that MIA represses. Doubles as the lead singer of the Hi Hi Meows, an Asian metal band that lives in Mia’s mind. Mezzo with belt.

SEEKING:

DIANA (to play she/her, any race, late teens) — The Grim Reaper’s daughter. Plucky and bright in a dark world. Diana has spent her entire existence dreaming of being a reaper despite her dad’s insistence that she’s “too soft.” Once given the chance to take her dad’s job, Diana realizes he may be right: she falls in love with life and realizes that being “too soft” is a part of herself that she doesn’t want to lose. Powerful pop vocals with Disney Princess brightness. Soprano.

JOSH (to play he/him, any race, late teens) — A terminally ill human teenager with a seemingly unbreakable spirit. Goofy and dorky, quick with a joke and an expert at putting those around him at ease even if it’s at the expense of him processing his own feelings. Must have strong comedic chops. Bright and earnest, Evan Hansen–esque. Tenor.

MORT (to play he/him, any race, late teens) — Diana’s older brother and Grim’s heir apparent. The golden child trained from day one to take over his father’s role; he loves death and hates humans. When his sister gets the job he’s expecting, Mort becomes unmoored, torn between desperately wanting to be the great reaper he was always destined to be and supporting his sister. Eventually, his sister’s embracing of humanity triggers his descent into true villainy. Strong pop tenor.

TAMMY (to play she/her, white, late 30s) — A recently deceased Karen. Fierce type-A mama bear who refuses to move on, much to the chagrin of the inhabitants of Limbo. Driven, angry, and desperate to find out if she did life correctly. Approaches problems by demanding to speak to the manager of Limbo. Belty rock-influenced vocal, a bit of Alanis grit. Soprano.

GRIM (to play he/him, any race, 40s–50s) — The first and only Grim Reaper. With the gravitas of Mufasa, Big D is a faithful executor of his job. He cares deeply about protecting the reapers and society he built. Not currently featured vocally.

THE DEATH OF LOVE (to play she/her, any race, 40s–50s) — Grim’s romantic partner and Diana/Mort’s mom. Quick to tell you all the reasons why love never lasts. Driven by wanting what’s best for her kids, but uses tough love because she thinks soft spots are where a good thing starts to rot. Soprano.

NORMAN (to play he/him, any race, 30s–50s, any vocal part) — Limbo’s effervescent, yet hyper-vigilant doorman. Must have strong comedic chops.

THE LAWS OF NATURE (to play he/him, any race, any age) — A spooky personified book. Powerful and mysterious. The Laws of Nature govern the universe: the rules of physics, electromagnetism, life, and death are contained within their mighty pages.

THE DEATH OF INNOCENCE (to play she/her, any race, any age but presents as a little girl) — Takes too much delight in exposing kids to the horrors of the world. Seems out of a horror movie. Bright and childlike. Soprano or alto.

THE DEATH OF TRADITION (to play he/him, any race, any age) — A self-serious deep-voiced reaper who gets very upset at how difficult his job is. Presents as very traditional which is ironic given how much he loves ending old things. Low and full. Bass.

THE DEATH OF PURPOSE (to play he/him, any race, any age) — A stoner-type who loves getting people off track, because what does it all mean, man? Tenor or bass.

ENSEMBLE (all ethnicities, ages, and vocal parts) — The ensemble defines the world and portrays a range of characters throughout the musical. Every ensemble track will be featured in some way.

SEEKING:

[NIKOS PETROPOULOS] (Greek American, Male-Presenting, 50s–60s) — Regarded as one of the world’s top theoretical physicists. Appears affable: father figure, teacher, and mentor. The possibility that the Collider may prove his signature theory correct within his lifetime awakens latent ambition, particularly when a former student proposes an alternate theory which would supplant Nikos' orderly vision of the universe with one much more chaotic and random. Tenor–Baritenor.

[AVA MOSLEY] (American, Female-Presenting, 20s) — Mostly self-taught, Ava is a brilliant young physicist from a disadvantaged background at a public university. CERN is her first-ever opportunity to make her mark. She arrives with sky-high expectations and soon finds herself disappointed. Coming from a red state, she foresees the wave of science skepticism which will soon engulf her nation and much of the world. Mezzo Soprano.

[LEONORA BONAFACIO] (Italian, Female-Presenting, 40s) — An experimental physicist who has risen up the administrative ranks to head the biggest project at CERN. An effective realist who manages to herd the scientific cats while succeeding at the politicking necessary to keep this project funded. When a populist British MP threatens to derail its future, Leonora finds herself caught between the two conflicting imperatives at the heart of her mission. Alto/Mezzo.

[JAVID SATTARI] (Iranian, Male-Presenting, 30s) — A brilliant young physicist whose career hasn't yet taken hold. A former student of Nikos, he notices that his mentor’s signature theory has some major theoretical holes and is working on a theory of his own which directly contradicts his former teacher's. Tenor–baritenor.

[BLAKE GRIFFIN] (British, Male-Presenting, 40s) — A new breed of populist firebrand recently elected to Parliament. Smart and charismatic science-skeptic who questions the huge expense of this experiment. Opportunistic, sees this as an issue to advance his career, and a free-marketer who believes private enterprise is better suited to yield practical discoveries. Rock Tenor.

[WANG LIU / PETER HIGGS] (Chinese, Male-Presenting, 50s) — A dedicated engineer who hasn’t seen his family in years. Wants to ensure that the Collider is mechanically sound and feels administration is rushing them toward disaster. Baritone. Featured Ensemble.

[CARLOS LEGNANI] (Argentinian, Male-Presenting, 30s) — Similar to Wang Liu, Carlos understands the importance of both mechanical and theoretical operation. Though caught in a power struggle with Wang Liu, Carlos is conflict-averse and ends up working siloed on his own. Tenor. Featured Ensemble.

ENSEMBLE (All backgrounds and gender identities, 20s–50s, all vocal parts) — The ensemble builds the world of the musical as scientists, theoreticians, physicists and politicians surrounding the work at CERN as the team embarks upon building the largest machine ever built by humans, and the discovery of the Higgs Boson (god particle). Strong contemporary vocal requirements.
