BREAKDOWN
LOVE & SPUMONI
by Jacques Lamarre
Based on the novel by Mary Lou Piland and Jenna Barrett Bernstein
It's the 1980s in Waterbury, CT. What does that mean for teenager Mary Lou? Big hair, a big Italian family, and her first big crush. When she spots a handsome black student at Sacred Heart High School, it's love at first sight. Can she win over Anthony and, more importantly, get her family to see that love is color blind? Based on the true story of Waterbury's own Mary Lou Piland, who became a viral sensation when she told her story on The Moth Radio Hour.
MARY LOU - An energetic, determined woman who knows how to get what she wants. Early 40s - Early 50s, she is an Italian-American woman with an ability to command a room without demanding that attention. Cute in words and actions and pleasantly plump - at least enough to make fun of herself for it a little. This character serves as a narrator, and also must be able to play MANY other characters of various ages and genders (Uncles, Aunts, Fathers, Mothers, friends, teachers, etc). Chameleon-like character work, while still taking the audience on the journey of her story.
ANTHONY - A handsome, African-American 20-something with an athletic build. He is always a gentleman, but sometimes too reticent for Mary Lou. He is the object of her affection at all times. Anthony is fun, even if he doesn't always know what he wants. He loves quietly. He is calm and patient. He believes good will win out in the end. Actor must be a GOOD DANCER as much of their story is told with dance.
TEEN MARY LOU - A 20ish year old version of her older self. Brash, straight-forward, and determined. She is energetic and knows how to get what she wants. She's not manipulative or sneaky, but can always find a way to get what she wants. Italian-American, living in a Catholic house in an Italian neighborhood. Cute and charming, not svelte, but not plump. An ordinary suburban girl who acts extraordinarily. Must be a GOOD DANCER as much of her story is told with dance.
