BREAKDOWN

Mercurial by nature, confused by age, and blind to his weaknesses, decides to divide his kingdom amongst his three daughters only one of whom loves him enough to speak the truth. Thrown into a rage, the king exiles his youngest daughter, turns on his best friends, and becomes increasingly irrational. When his eldest daughters manifest their true natures and betray his trust with their manipulative machinations, Lear’s world collapses with tragic consequences for all. An epic and hauntingly unforgettable story of love, greed, madness and reconciliation.

CORDELIA (Female, 20-30) Lear’s youngest daughter who loves her father deeply but is unwilling to sacrifice integrity for status. Loyal and kind.

GONERIL (Female, 40-50) Lear’s eldest daughter. Ambitious, aggressive and fearless in her manipulation. Feigns the role of the dutiful daughter, but capable of betraying anyone who stands in the way of her goals.

DUKE OF ALBANY (Male, 40-55) Goneril’s husband.Moral and honest. In the dark with regards to his wife’s plotting. When her plans are revealed, he feels a duty to stand up for what is right.

OSWALD, (Male, 30-40) Goneril’s steward, equally cunning and cowardly. Willing to do anything to win. The actor playing Oswald may also double with other roles.

REGAN (Female, 40-50) Lear’s second daughter. Appears more empathic to her father, but is craftier than her sister about hiding her own self-interest. Thoroughly capable of seizing an available opportunity.

KING OF FRANCE (Male, 30-40) Cordelia’s suitor and then husband. Masculine, strong and eminently capable. Will be doubled with other roles.

DUKE OF BURGUNDY(Male, 30-40) Cordelia’s second suitor. Rejects Cordelia when Lear advises that there will be no dowry. Will be doubled with other roles.

EARL OF KENT (male, 40-50) Lear’s courtier and adviser. Blunt, selfless, and loyal. Straightforward with Lear in a way that others are unable to be. His honesty secures his banishment, but he returns in disguise to serve as the king’s unknowing protector.

FOOL (Male 25-70) Possesses wit, a sharp intellect, and sometimes a sadness or anger in his humor and observations. Dedicated to the king and upset about his recent loss of power.

EARL OF GLOUCESTER (Male, 50-70) one of Lear’s most trusted and trustworthy advisers. Comfortable with his station in life. Has integrity, but his somewhat reckless personal past continues to complicate his life. His moral center and overly trusting nature are the cause of his downfall at the hands of his son, Edmund.

EDGAR (Male, 30-40) Gloucester’s elder son. He is the favored son with all of the privileges that legitimacy brings. When wrongfully accused of plotting against his father and banished, he disguises himself as a vagrant to survive and ultimately find vindication and clear his name.

EDMUND (Male, 30-40) Gloucester’s younger and illegitimate son. Amoral, cunning, and devious. Power-hungry and manipulative. He has managed to maintain a place in his father’s household and earn his trust. Keen to ruin his legitimate brother’s name and take his place as the family heir.

CURAN(Male, 25-35) gentleman of Gloucester’s household, loyal and trustworthy. Will be doubled with other roles.
